LUBBOCK, Texas – Fabian Jara Dohman had an impressive collegiate debut and Shanay Briscoe and Wolf Mahler had strong starts in the multi-events to pace Texas during Friday's action at the Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
Jara Dohmann, a freshman from Paraguay, captured the javelin on the opening day of the three-day meet with a personal-best toss of 243 feet, 7 inches (74.25m).
Mahler, competing in his first collegiate decathlon, is second with a total of 3,900 after the first five events. He had top time in the first and last events of the day. He opened with a time of 10.86 seconds in the 100 meters and ended with a personal-best 47.27 in the 400. Mahler was more than two seconds ahead of the rest of the eight-man field in the 400.
"We knew we had to get off to a great start in the decathlon and Wolf set the tone with a seasonal-best in the 100 meters and a lifetime best (22-9/6.93m) in the long jump," head coach Mario Sategna said. "Just a great overall day for him."
Briscoe, a eight-time All-American and six-time Big 12 high jump champion, is third in the heptathlon with 3,428 points after four events. She had a season-best mark of 6 feet, 3/4 inches (1.85m) in the high jump to post an event-high 1,041 points. Briscoe was also third in the shot put with a toss of 40-2 3/4 (12.26m).
"She's a senior, she's a veteran," Sategna said. "We never want to take that for granted. It's very nice to have someone of her caliber that sets the tone."
The final five events of the decathlon and last three in the heptathlon will take place Saturday at Texas Tech's Fuller Track and Field Complex. Both events begin at 10 a.m.
Lindsay Vollmer of Kansas, the defending Big 12 and NCAA champion, leads the heptathlon with 3,597 points.
Devin Dick of Kansas State is first in the decathlon with a total of 4,122.
Jara Dohmann was expected to redshirt this year after joining the team for the spring semester. He entered the meet with a career best of 236-8 (72.14m). He was in second place when he launched his winning toss on his fifth attempt. He passed Garrett Snow of Oklahoma who ended up second with a toss 232-8 (70.92m).
"He came at semester break and has done a great job," Sategna said of Jara Dohmann. "He hit the ground the running. That's never an easy transition, but he's handled that very well."
Jara Dohmann also puts himself in the national picture in the event. He is No. 6 on the 2014 NCAA performer's list. The top 48 marks in each individual event advances to the NCAA East and West Regionals (May 29-31). The top 12 from each region earn berths to next month's NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.
Just three of the 21 events were completed Friday. The running prelims headline Saturday's action.
Dohmann's win and Mark Pinales' third-place showing in the 10,000 put the 10th-ranked UT men in fourth place with 16 points. Oklahoma State is first with 27 and Oklahoma second (24).
Senior Megan Siebert collected four points for the second-ranked Longhorn women with a fifth-place finish in the 10,000 meters. She clocked a personal-best 35:47.57.
Iowa State leads the women's standings with 25 points. Oklahoma is second with 24. Texas is ninth, but had no entries in two of the events – the hammer and javelin.
Longhorn Notes
• Fabian Jara Dohmann became the second Longhorn to win the Big 12 javelin. Tom Engwall captured the 2004 crown with a toss of 239-6 (72.99). Dohmann is just the second Longhorn to win the javelin at the conference meet in the last 23 years. Collegiate record-holder Patrik Boden won the Southwest Conference crown from 1989-91. Dohmann is now No. 5 on the all-time UT performers list.
• With Shanay Briscoe's season-best clearance of 6 feet, 3/4 inch (1.85m) in the decathlon high jump, the senior unofficially moved from a tie for 15th into a fifth-place tie on the 2014 NCAA performers list.
• Sophomore Johannes Hock, the 2013 NCAA decathlon champion, will not able to defend his Big 12 title in the event. Last season, Hock was voted the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year after setting a meet record at the league championships. He led from start to finish, posting the second-best tally (8,293) in school history and seventh-highest total in collegiate history. He made his multi-event season debut at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, finishing third in the decathlon with 7,573 points. That total ranks No. 8 on the 2014 NCAA performers list and is already nearly assured of a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships. He will compete in the 110-meter hurdles, long jump and discus this weekend.
