ATHENS, Ga. – The University of Texas lost to No. 1 USC in the NCAA Men's Tennis Championship Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon at Dan Magill Tennis Complex, 4-1. The ninth-ranked Longhorns (23-6) conclude their 2014 campaign after returning to the round of eight for the first time since 2009.
"It was a good year for the guys," head coach Michael Center said "They fought hard and did everything I asked them to do. We learned a lot. I told them after the match that there is no reason to hang their heads -- they have a lot to be proud of."
Texas struck first by claiming the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead. Senior All-American David Holiner and junior Jacoby Lewis finished first with an 8-6 win over Max de Vroome and Eric Johnson at the No. 3 position.
16th-ranked Lloyd Glasspool and Søren Hess-Olesen clinched the doubles point in a tiebreaker against the nation's top-ranked doubles team -- USC's Yannick Hanfmann and Ray Sarmiento. After falling behind early, 3-0, Glasspool and Hess-Olesen rallied to win the next five games and take a 5-3 lead. USC broke serve to force a tiebreaker at 7-7, but Glasspool and Hess-Olesen won the tiebreaker to clinch the match and the doubles point, 8-7(7-4).
Adrien Berkowicz and George Goldhoff were tied at 6-6 with USC's Connor Farren and Roberto Quiroz at No. 2 doubles when the point was clinched.
With rain forcing the match indoors on the four-court Hopkins Courts at Dan Magill Tennis Complex, singles position Nos. 1-4 were played simultaneously while position Nos. 5 and 6 began as the preceding courts opened up.
The Longhorns fell behind early in singles action by surrendering the first set in all four singles matches.
USC's 91st-ranked Max de Vroome and ninth-ranked Ray Sarmiento gave the Trojans a 2-1 team lead with straight-set victories over 102st-ranked George Goldhoff (6-3, 6-2) at position No. 4 and 40th-ranked Lloyd Glasspool (6-1, 7-6 (7-3)) at position No. 2, respectively.
Both 16th-ranked Hess-Olesen and Berkowicz lost in three sets in their respective singles matches. Hess-Olesen lost to USC's 10th-ranked Yannick Hanfmann (7-5, 3-6, 6-2) at No. 1 singles. Berkowicz came up on the short end of an even dual-clinching match with USC's 42nd-ranked Roberto Quiroz (6-3, 6-7 (2-7), 6-3).
Sophomore Nick Naumann and junior Clement Homs did not finish their matches at position Nos. 5 and 6, respectively, when the dual match was clinched.
Next season Texas is projected to return nine of 11 players, including its entire NCAA postseason lineup -- excluding the graduation of senior David Holiner (No. 3 doubles). Texas also loses senior Sudanwa Sitaram to graduation.
Glasspool and Hess-Olesen will compete in the NCAA individual singles and doubles draws beginning on Wednesday, May 21 in Athens, Georgia. TexasSports.com will distribute the individual draws when they become available.
