LUBBOCK, Texas – The second-ranked Texas women, paced by eight event victories, including seven Sunday, cruised to the team title at the 2014 Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships to complete the league season sweep.
The Longhorn women won the Big 12 Indoor title in March, also by a wide margin. The 10th-ranked men were the runners-up for the second time this season at the league meet.
"We had a great overall team effort from the staff to the athletes," head coach Mario Sategna said. "We had a lot of people step up over the weekend. I can't say enough about the leadership on this team."
The women tallied 149 points to outdistance second-place Baylor which produced 113.50. Sixth-ranked Texas Tech, which played host to the three-day meet at Fuller Track and Field Complex, captured the men's crown with 160.50 points. The Longhorns ended with 125 points in the men's standings, which included victories by Ryan Crouser in the shot put and discus.
The women, who swept the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles for the fifth time (first since 2006), piled up 14 qualifiers for finals in the 100 meters, 200, 400 and 400-meter hurdles and won each one of those events Sunday. The UT women won their eighth Big 12 Outdoor title and first since 2012.
"We you get to the conference setting you are trying to advance as many as you can to finals and when you get there it's about beating people head-to-head," Sategna said.
Under windy conditions in west Texas that's just what the Longhorn women did.
Morolake Akinosun won both the 100 and 200 meters and fellow sophomore Courtney Okolo not only set a meet record in the 400 for the second-straight day, but also eclipsed the collegiate mark with a blazing time of the 50.03 seconds. Monique Henderson of UCLA held the record of 50.10 since the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Championships. Okolo's time is also first on the 2014 IAAF World performance list.
Okolo posted a prelim-best 50.76, snapping facility record, in the 400m on Saturday. Akinosun clocked a wind-aided (3.8 meters per second) 10.96 in the 100 and 22.17 (w4.3) in the 200.
Akinosun was the high-point scorer for the meet with 22.5 points. She also ran the opening leg of the victorious 4x100-meter relay unit, which clocked a season-best 43.54. Akinosun was joined by Kendall Baisden, Okolo and Ashley Spencer, who did not compete in her signature 400, but picked up points with a fifth-place finish in the 200 (23.07w) and sixth in the 100 (11.40w).
The Longhorns had six of the eight entries in the final of the 200 meters and piled up 25 points in that event. They also had 15 in the 400-meter hurdles with senior Danielle Dowie claiming her second Big 12 title (also 2012) with a season-best 56.62 and Melissa Gonzalez finishing fourth in a career-best 58.39.
Senior Marielle Hall won the 1,500 meters, her fourth Big 12 title of the 2013-14 academic year. She was the favorite in the 5,000, but with the team title in hand was scratched.
Baisden, a freshman, continues to impress. She was second in the 400 in a personal-best 50.46, which is the second-best time on the all-time U.S. Junior performers list and No. 9 on the all-time collegiate outdoor performers chart.
Crouser has his second meet and UT record in as many days. One day after winning the shot put in a meet and school-record 70 feet, 2 1/2 inches (21.39m), Crouser took home the discus title with a Big 12-record and UT-record toss of 209-8 (63.90).
The Longhorn men appeared to be good position early Sunday. Texas collected 21 points in the discus, the seventh event of the meet and first of the day, to jump from third to first with a total of 60. They leapt Texas Tech, which only had one of four competitors score in the event. Will Spence was third with a toss of 191-6 (58.36m). Johannes Hock was sixth and Blake Jakobsson seventh.
However, the men lost six points in the one of the first running events of the evening session and were not able to gather enough points to make a push against the Red Raiders. The 4x100-meter relay unit, which finished third, was disqualified for handing off the baton outside the zone.
"We ran a few points short on the men's side, but I'm proud of the effort to those guys," Sategna said.
Texas Tech ended up winning four individual titles in the meet and had multiple scorers in a number of events.
But the Longhorn men, who had five event victories, had a strong finish to the meet.
Sophomore Zack Bilderback became the first Longhorn to win the Big 12 men's outdoor 400-meter title when he cruised home in a personal-best 45.66, which is No. 10 on the UT all-time performance list.
Freshman Senoj-Jay Givans nearly duplicated Akinosun's feat of winning the 100 and 200 meters. He captured the 200 in a wind-aided (+4.2 mps) 20.28 and was second in the 100 in blazing time of 9.90, but it was also aided by a 4.2 mps wind. Trayvon Bromell of Baylor, another freshman sensation, won in 9.77. Bromell set the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays record in March by clocking a 10.01, a time that is No. 3 on the 2014 NCAA performers list. Givans moved to No. 7 with Saturday's school-record 10.10 (adjusted to 10.13 for altitude and NCAA qualification purposes) in the prelim.
Givans, the second Longhorn to win the Big 12 outdoor 200 meters (Brendan Christian, 2003-04), ended up being the top freshman men's scorer in the meet with 18 points. Crouser logged a team-high 20 points with his two wins, tied for the second-highest total in the meet.
After a grueling two days competing and finishing fourth in the heptathlon, Briscoe had enough left to claim her league-record seventh high jump title Sunday afternoon. She cleared 5-11 1/4 (1.81m), along with Alyx Treasure and Rachel Proteau of Kansas State, but Briscoe took home gold based on few misses. She cleared the her first three heights on her first attempt. Briscoe scored 15 points over the last two days with her fourth-place showing in the heptathlon.
Kaitlin Petrillose had the first victory for the Texas women, winning the pole vault Saturday.
The Longhorns are off next weekend and will gear up for the NCAA West Preliminary Round, set for May 29-31 in Fayetteville, Ark.
Longhorn Notes
• Women's Outdoor Track and Field becomes the seventh University of Texas program to capture a Big 12 Conference championship during the 2013-14 athletics season, joining Volleyball, Men's Swimming and Diving, Women's Swimming and Diving, Women's Indoor Track and Field, Men's Tennis and Men's Golf.
• The women swept the Big 12 indoor and outdoor titles for the fifth time and first since 2006 (also 1998-99, '03). The Longhorns won either a Big 12 men's or women's outdoor crown for the ninth season in the 18 years of the league's existence. The Texas men and women were attempting to sweep the outdoor titles for the fifth time (1997, '99, '03 and '06). The women and men also finished first and second, respectively, at the 2014 Big 12 Indoor Championships.
• Shanay Briscoe won her fourth Big 12 outdoor high jump title in as many years and her third conference season sweep following a victory at the 2014 indoor meet (also 2011 and 2013). She became the first female high jumper to win four straight Big 12 outdoor titles and just the second athlete to win all four either indoors or outdoors, joining Longhorn Andra Manson, who captured all four men's indoor titles from 2004-07. Briscoe also broke a tie with former Longhorns Erin Aldrich and Destinee Hooker for most league high jump titles. Aldrich and Hooker had six apiece, with each winning three indoors and outdoors. Erik Kynard of Kansas State has the most on the men's side with six (three indoors and outdoors).
• Marielle Hall claimed her fourth Big 12 title of the 2013-14 academic year with her victory in the 1,500 meters. She won the 2013 cross country title, as well the mile and 3,000 meters at the 2014 Big 12 Indoor meet. Hall was also entered in the 5,000 meters and has the second-best time (15:19.26) in the nation this year, but the with the meet wrapped up she was scratched from the event.
• With her time of 50.46 in the 400-meter final, freshman Kendall Baisden moved to No. 2 on the all-time U.S. Junior performer's list and ninth on the performance chart. Current or former Longhorns occupy the top 10 on the performance list. Sanya Richards had nine of the top 10 times and Ashley Spencer the other one (while at Illinois).
• The women's 4x100-meter relay unit of Morlake Akinosun, Kendall Basiden, Courtney Okolo and Ashley Spencer won in a season-best 43.54. It marked the Longhorns' 11th Big 12 title in the event, but first since 2006. Texas won the first 10 Big 12 4x100m relay crowns.
• Morolake Akinosun became the fourth Longhorn to sweep women's 100 and 200 meters at the Big 12 meet, joining LaKeisha Backus (1998-99), Sanya Richards (2003-04) and Marshevet Hooker (2005-06).
• Ryan Crouser became the sixth Big 12 athlete to win both the discus and outdoor shot put. The others were: Jamie Beyer, ISU (1999); Carl Myerscough, Nebraska (2002, '04); Brian Robison, Texas (2006); Mason Finley, Kansas (2010). Crouser snapped the school discus record of 208-9 set by Jim McGoldrick at the 1976 Kansas Relays.
• Fabian Jara Dohmann became the second Longhorn to win the Big 12 javelin. Tom Engwall captured the 2004 crown with a toss of 239-6 (72.99). Dohmann is just the second Longhorn to win the javelin at the conference meet in the last 23 years. Collegiate record-holder Patrik Boden won the Southwest Conference crown from 1989-91. Dohmann is now No. 5 on the all-time UT performers list.
• With Shanay Briscoe's season-best clearance of 6 feet, 3/4 inch (1.85m) in the heptathlon high jump on Friday, the senior unofficially moved from a tie for 15th into a fifth-place tie on the 2014 NCAA performers list. By finishing fourth in the heptathlon (5,325), she claimed her third All-Big 12 honor in a multi-event. Briscoe was runner-up in the pentathlon at the 2014 Big 12 Indoor Championships with a career-best 4,039 and fourth in the same event in 2013. Briscoe's heptathlon total places her second on the school's all-time performer's list and fourth on the performance chart. Only Natalie Lew (1987-89) has posted better marks. She had a UT-record 5,576 in 1989.
• Sophomore Johannes Hock, the 2013 NCAA decathlon champion, was not able to defend his Big 12 title in the event. Last season, Hock was voted the 2013 Big 12 Outdoor Outstanding Male Freshman of the Year after setting a meet record at the league championships. He led from start to finish, posting the second-best tally (8,293) in school history and seventh-highest total in collegiate history. He made his multi-event season debut at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays, finishing third in the decathlon with 7,573 points. Entering the weekend, that total ranked No. 8 on the 2014 NCAA performers list, nearly assuring him of a trip to the NCAA Outdoor Championships (top 24 earn berths). He competed in the 110-meter hurdles, long jump and discus this weekend.
• Wolf Mahler's total of 7,602 in the decathlon places him No. 8 on the UT all-time performers list. It is also the best performance in the NCAA this season by a freshman.
• The Longhorns have won the last three Big 12 outdoor shot put titles and two of the last three indoors. Ryan Crouser won indoors in 2012 and 2014, as well as outdoors the last two years. Jacob Thormaehlen won outdoors in 2012.
