ATHENS, Ga. -- Texas Men's Tennis featured two players in action on day one of the 64-player NCAA Championship singles draw on Wednesday at Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
Junior No. 16 Søren Hess-Olesen defeated San Diego's 58th-ranked Clarke Spinosa in straight sets (6-1, 6-4), while junior No. 40 Lloyd Glasspool lost to Harvard's 39th-ranked Denis Nguyen (6-4, 6-3).
In Hess-Olesen's first set, he broke serve twice and won the last four games for a 6-1 decision. Hess-Olesen began the second set by breaking serve twice to take a 5-2 lead. Facing a possible match point, San Diego's Spinosa won two consecutive games to narrow Hess-Olesen's advantage, 5-4. The Big 12 Player of the Year served for the match in the next game for his 10th straight-set win in his last 13 matches.
Glasspool fell behind to an early three-game deficit, only to recover a break and tie the first set, 3-3. After both players held serve for four games, Harvard's Nguyen broke serve on match point to win the first set, 6-4. In the second set, Glasspool could not come up with a late service break after Nguyen took a 3-1 advantage. Both Glasspool and Nguyen held serve in the last five games for a 6-3 final.
Hess-Olesen improves to 4-1 during his second appearance in NCAA singles postseason play. Last season he earned ITA All-America honors after advancing to the quarterfinals. Wednesday marked Glasspool's first appearance in NCAA singles.
Hess-Olesen advances to face East Carolina's 25th-ranked Joran Vliegen on Thursday in the round of 32. Both Glasspool and Hess-Olesen will begin play the NCAA doubles draw on Thursday against Florida's 22nd-ranked Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson at 5 p.m. Central.
