ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Texas advanced to the round of 16 in both the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles & Doubles Championships on Thursday at Dan Magil Tennis Complex.
Junior All-American No. 16 Søren Hess-Olesen defeated East Carolina's 25th-ranked Joran Vliegen 7-5, 6-3 in the second round of the singles draw. In the opening round of doubles, 16th-ranked Hess-Olesen and junior Lloyd Glasspool teamed up for a 6-3, 6-4 win over Florida's 22nd-ranked Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson.
Singles
With his 30th singles win of the year, 16th-ranked Hess-Olesen returns to the NCAA singles round of 16 for the second consecutive season after a quarterfinal run in 2013. Hess-Olesen (30-7) is the 23rd Longhorn to record 30 or more overall singles wins in a season and the first since Dimitar Kutrovsky (36-12) and Ed Corrie (30-12) did so during the 2009-10 season.
Hess-Olesen took advantage timely break points near the end of each set for his 16th win against a nationally ranked opponent this year.
In the first set, both players held serve in the first 11 games until Hess-Olesen broke serve on match point for a 7-5 win. With a 3-3 tie in the second set, Hess-Olesen closed out the match by serving a love game, breaking serve and serving another love game for the 6-3 win.
Hess-Olesen recorded four love games on Thursday -- two in each set -- and did not allow a point while serving. The Denmark native is one of just three seeded (top-16) players to advance to the NCAA Singles Championship round of 16.
Doubles
Glasspool and Hess-Olesen made their NCAA Doubles Championship debut with a gutsy straight-set win over Florida's 22nd-ranked Elliott Orkin and Gordon Watson. It marked the fifth consecutive win for the Texas duo.
In the first set, the service games played out until the Longhorns broke serve to take a 5-3 lead. Hess-Olesen held serve for set point and the 6-3 win, but not before rallying from a 15-40 deficit in the final game of the first set.
In the second set, Texas and Florida traded two break points each, including a love game service break that gave Texas a 5-4 lead. Hess-Olesen again held serve in the final game of the set for the 6-4 win to clinch the match.
This marks the second straight year that the Longhorns have advanced in the NCAA Doubles Championship. Last season, Chris Camillone and David Holiner were NCAA Doubles Championship finalists.
ITA All-America honors
By advancing to the round of 16 and being a top-16 seed in the draw, Hess-Olesen has officially checked-off two of the three criteria needed to earn ITA All-America honors. In order to earn ITA All-America honors in singles, a student-athlete must accomplish at least one of the following -- be a top-16 seed in NCAA Singles Championship (check), reach the round of 16 in the NCAA Singles Championship (check) or finish in the top-20 of final ITA National Singles Rankings (TBD).
In doubles, Glasspool and Hess-Olesen are one win away from achieving All-America status as a duo. To be a doubles All-American, a duo must be a top-eight seed in the NCAA Doubles Championship (n/a), reach the quarterfinals in the NCAA Doubles Championship (TBD) or finish in the top 10 of the final ITA National Doubles Rankings (TBD).
