AUSTIN, Texas -- Ninth-ranked Texas Men's Tennis opened the ITA Kick-Off Weekend with a 4-1 victory over Minnesota on Saturday at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center. It marks UT's 20th consecutive home-opening win, including a 15-0 record in home openers under Head Coach Michael Center.
Minnesota (2-1) edged Texas (3-0) for the doubles point in a tiebreaker, but the Longhorns rebounded by sweeping singles competition with four victories. Freshman John Mee clinched the win for the Longhorns with a straight-set decision at court six.
"This was a great team win. We had opportunities in doubles that we didn't convert on, but we just kept competing," Center said. "It was a testament to the grit of this team and their resilient attitude."
Junior Nick Naumann was the first to put the Longhorns on the scoreboard after making his way to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Minnesota's Felix Corwin at No. 4 singles.
Senior All-American Søren Hess-Olesen improved 13-2 on the year with his fifth consecutive singles victory. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year cruised to a 6-1, 3-0 lead at No. 1 singles, before Minnesota's 17th-ranked Leandro Toledo won the next five games for a 5-3 lead in the second set. Hess-Olesen was able to stave off a third-set by winning the next four games to claim the straight-set win.
Senior Adrien Berkowicz notched his team-best 15th win of the year with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Minnesota's Jack Hamburg at No. 2 singles.
Texas faces Florida State on Sunday at 1 p.m. Central in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend Austin Regional final. The Longhorns and Seminoles will play for a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championship in Chicago from Feb. 13-16.
