WACO, Texas – Heading into Saturday's contest the No. 12 Baylor Bears had scored on their first drive of every game. The Texas Longhorns stuffed the Bears' first drive and all of their other drives in the first half to grab a 23-17 road victory.
Texas (5-7, 4-5 Big 12) was able to keep the nation's top offense at bay for much of the contest as Baylor (9-3, 6-3) was held scoreless in the first half for the first time since Oct. 29, 2011.
The Longhorns quickly grabbed the momentum after forcing Baylor to punt on its first drive of the game. Quarterback Tyrone Swoopes found tight end Caleb Bluiett open behind the safeties for a 57-yard catch and run touchdown on the Longhorns' third play from scrimmage.
After Texas took a quick 7-0 lead, Baylor's offense continued to be stymied by the Texas defense and the momentum shifted further toward UT's side.
Senior kicker Nick Rose had one of the best games of his career as he went 3-for-4 on field goals, including a career-long 53-yarder. His only miss was another 53-yarder that came up short into a strong headwind.
After setting a freshmen record for rushing yards in his first career start on Thanksgiving, Chris Warren, III was impressive again. He ran for 106 yards on 28 carries to become the 12th freshman in school history to post at least two 100-yard rushing games.
Swoopes was 12-of-19 passing for 151 yards, including the touchdown strike to Bluiett. He also ran for 52 yards with a touchdown.
Baylor outgained Texas 479-307 but turnovers plagued the Bears. Receiver turned quarterback Lynx Hawthorne completed 10-of-22 passes and threw two interceptions. His problems passing and consistent pressure from Texas forced Baylor to abandon its game plan and switch to the Wildcat formation almost exclusively in the second half.
Senior Duke Thomas and sophomore Jason Hall pulled in the two interceptions for Texas. The defense also forced a pair of fumbles, which the Longhorns recovered as well.
Defensive tackle Paul Boyette Jr. led the Longhorns with nine tackles, five of them solo stops. Two of his tackles were for a loss. Naashon Hughes registered the only sack for Texas.
With the win Texas posted its second win over a team ranked in the Top 15 this season when the Longhorns were not ranked. It also was the first time Texas defeated any ranked opponent on its home field since Nov. 3, 2012 at Texas Tech.
