AUSTIN, Texas -- Ninth-ranked Texas Men's Tennis defeated Rice, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Texas gained an early lead by earning the doubles point and secured the win by outscoring Rice, 5-1, in singles competition.
"We carried over our effort from Friday's match and played good doubles again today," head coach Michael Center said. "Rice gave us a good challenge and we had to fight hard in singles to come out of top. Everybody contributed to this win."
Senior All-American Søren Hess-Olesen breezed to 6-1, 6-2 win over Rice's Srikar Alla to give UT a 2-0 lead. Hess-Olesen has won nine consecutive singles matches after reaching his 90th career singles victory on Sunday (90-34).
Senior All-American Lloyd Glasspool then secured a win on court No. 2 to give Texas a 3-0 lead. Glasspool defeated Jamie Malik in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Senior Adrien Berkowicz clinched the match for the Longhorns and maintained his perfect dual match record (7-0) after cruising to win over Rice's Max Andrews 6-2, 7-6.
The dual match played to completion after the Longhorns clinched the team win. Freshmen Adrian Ortiz-Ruiz defeated Rice's Gutsavo Gonzales, 7-6, 6-3, at No. 6 singles and Michael Reichmann defeated David Warren, 6-4, 7-6(11), at No. 5 singles. Junior Nick Naumann forced a third-set against Adam Gustafsson, but was edged in a 10-point tiebreaker to determine the match, 6-1, 6-7 (6-8), 1-0 (6).
The Longhorns will play in the ITA National Indoor Team Championships in Chicago beginning on Feb. 13.
