All-America sophomore Madisyn Cox lands UT’s top NCAA 200 IM finish in six seasons.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Texas All-America sophomore Madisyn Cox recorded personal bests in consecutive swims and placed third in the 200-yard individual medley to highlight day one for the Longhorns Thursday at the NCAA Championships.
Cox (Lubbock, Texas) became the second-fastest Longhorn in the 200 IM with her third-place effort of 1 minute, 54.43 seconds in the championship final. The swim marked her top individual finish in two NCAA Championships appearances, and it marked UT's top 200 IM result at the NCAA Championships since 2009, when two-time Olympian Kathleen Hersey placed second in the event.
Cox's performance is the third-fastest 200 IM in UT history, and it pushed her past former All-American Karlee Bispo for No. 2 among UT's all-time top swimmers in the 200 IM. Cox placed third in the event behind Olympic gold medalist Missy Franklin and the American record holder in the 200 backstroke, Elizabeth Pelton, both of California. The three-time Big 12 champion clocked 1:54.88 to qualify fourth in the morning preliminary round.
UT opened the day one finals with a fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay consolation final. Senior Gretchen Jaques teamed up with freshman Mimi Schneider, sophomore Brynne Wong and freshman Rebecca Millard to finish in 1:28.64. The same relay placed 11th in the preliminary round in 1:28.58, good for the eighth-fastest relay all-time at UT.
Texas capped the evening with the second-fastest 400 medley relay in school history, as seniors Sarah Denninghoff, Jaques, senior Kelsey LeNeave and Millard won the event's consolation final in 3:30.98, well under the 3:31.60 from the preliminary round.
Texas ended the first of the NCAA Championships' three days in 11th place with 42 points. The day two preliminary round begins Friday at 11 a.m. local time, 10 a.m. CT.
