Former Longhorn and Olympic silver medalist Leo Manzano set the meet and stadium records in the 800 meters run with a time of 1 minute, 46.63 seconds to highlight day two action at the Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays. Manzano broke his own Mike A. Myers Stadium record in the event, which he set last year with a time of 1:47.34.
"It's just incredible and a special moment," the Austin resident commented on his record. "I was glad I could come out here and perform at the Texas Relays on my home turf. This is something I've been looking forward to."
In his time at Texas, Manzano was a nine-time All-American and four-time NCAA champion.
Texas seniors Eduardo Rodriguez and Megan Siebert finished the meet off strong for the Longhorns. Rodriguez took the men's 5,000 meters with a time of 14:20.53. This is the second year in a row that Texas won the race after Mark Pinales claimed gold last year. Sibert was the runner-up in the women's 5,000 meters, using a strong kick to take second and finish in 16:31.82.
Former Longhorn Kendra Chambers took the 800-meter invitational title with a time of 2:06.57 in her return to Mike A. Myers Stadium. The 2013 graduate was a four-time All-American for the Longhorns.
Another meet record fell in the women's 3,000-meter steeplechase as Mary Goldkamp, running for Adidas/Rogue, finished in 10:04.24. The Bradley University graduate broke the previous record set in 2006 by Trina Cox of Abilene Christian with a time of 10:10.93.
Florida senior Kyle Strawn won his second-consecutive Texas Relays title in the men's hammer throw with a throw of 222 feet, 5 inches (67.79m). The throw bested his winning distance of 218-4 in 2014.
In the heptathlon, two athletes broke the 6,000-point threshold at the Texas Relays for the first time since 2007. Arkansas junior Alex Gochenour took the title with a total score of 6,027 points. Texas A&M senior Jena Hemann finished with 6,002 points for a new school record.
In the women's 5K, Amber Eichkorn from South Dakota turned in the fastest time in the nation this season with a time of 16:18.95.
UTEP's Anthony Rotich won a Texas Relays title for the second-straight year. He took the men's 1,500 meter title in 3:46.58, after winning the 3000-meter steeplechase in 2014 with a time of 8:38.68.
Both field and running events begin at 9:30 a.m. Friday. The four-day meet, in its 88th year, ends Saturday.
The Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays Fan Fest will be open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in the throws area of the stadium (northeast corner) and opening ceremonies will take place at 1 p.m. The Texas Relays Autograph Alley will allow fans to get autographs from some of Texas Relays greatest athletes and Olympians.
