Longhorns earn No. 5 seed for this week’s Big 12 Championship in Waco.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas (10-10, 6-3 Big 12) claimed the doubles point and notched three singles wins in a 4-0 win over Kansas (8-14, 4-5 Big 12) Sunday in the regular season finale at Caswell Tennis Center.
Texas won doubles contests at the third and second positions to clinch the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Neda Koprcina and freshman Dani Wagland fell behind a game to KU's Maria Cardona and Alexis Czapinski at third doubles before winning the ensuing six games to close out the match, 6-1.
The match at second doubles featured a tight contest that Texas ultimately finished off to close out the doubles session. UT sophomore Ratnika Batra and senior Lina Padegimaite held serve for a 6-5 lead over Kansas' Summer Collins and Rachel McNeely and then broke KU's serve in the following game to close out a 7-5 win. The remaining match at first doubles was suspended.
Texas made short work of Kansas in the singles session. Wagland broke for a 3-1 first-set lead over KU's McNeely at sixth singles and took the first set, 6-2. She never let up in the second set and finished off the match at 6-1 in the second set to give Texas a 2-0 lead.
Padegimaite followed suit on her Senior Day and staked Texas to a 3-0 lead. Padegimaite led KU's Czapinski 4-3 at fifth singles before holding and breaking Czapinski's serve for a 6-3 first-set win. Padegimaite cruised to a 6-2 second-set win to set up Batra for the clincher.
Batra finished her straight-sets win just moments after Padegimaite closed out her match. The New Delhi, India, native dealt KU's Cardona a 6-3, 6-3 defeat to finish off the 4-0 Texas win. The remaining matches at the first, second and fourth positions were suspended.
Texas has earned a No. 5 seed in this week's Big 12 Championship that opens Thursday in Waco. UT will open play in the quarterfinals on Friday against fourth-seeded TCU (start time TBA).
