Deep snapper Nate Boyer, who served in the Green Berets Special Forces unit before coming to Texas, agreed to a free-agent deal wtith the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday after the conclusion of the 2015 NFL Draft.
Boyer, a five-year player who served as UT's No. 1 long snapper on PAT/FGs his last three seasons, was offered a contract by the team right after the draft concluded.
"It was great," Boyer said. "[Seahawks] coach [Pete] Carroll called me, actually. He called and said, 'I want to invite you out to training camp,' and he actually said, 'I hope you accept my invitation.' Obviously, yes was the answer to that."
A native of Dublin, California, Boyer spent the day at Hermosa Beach near Los Angeles with friends.
Carroll sees Boyer as a potential fit with the Seahawks, who have made the last two Super Bowls, due to his experience at Texas and in the military, as well as his leadership qualities.
"The thing about Nate is he's such a hard worker," Texas head coach Charlie Strong said. "Any time someone represents your country, when you talk about courage, you talk about honor, that's what it's all about. I love him so much. He did a great job, he's an unbelievable leader, and he's going to be truly missed in our program."
Surprisingly, Seattle was not one of the teams who contacted Boyer leading up to the draft.
"It's kind of funny because I talked to a couple of different teams special teams coaches, but I hadn't talked to the Seahawks at all, so that was kind of a surprise, but they seem serious," Boyer said. "I didn't have any private workouts anywhere. I had a local tryout with the [San Francisco] 49ers, but that was it. I'm just excited."
