TORONTO, Canada – Two Longhorns helped Team USA win a pair of gold medals on Saturday night at the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto. Morolake Akinosun and Kendall Baisden each ran on a relay event to help the Red, White and Blue bring home gold as Team USA had its best showing at the meet since 1999.
Akinosun ran the third leg of the women's 4x100 meter relay to help the American squad of Barbara Pierre, Lekeisha Lawson and Kaylin Whitney win in 42.58 seconds. That time set a new Pan Am Games record.
Baisden followed her individual gold in the women's 400 meters with a gold in the 4x400 meter relay. The rising junior ran the anchor leg as her teammates Shamier Little, Kyra Jefferson and Shakima Wimbley combined to run 3:25.68.
The two golds the Longhorns helped win gave Team USA a total of 41 medals in track and field at the Pan Am Games. Americans combined to win 13 golds, 15 silvers and 13 bronzes over seven days of action.
"It was great to once again see Morolake and Kendall step up like they have done so many times for us here at Texas and bring home the gold, only this time it was in the red, white and blue for Team USA at the Pan Am Games," said Texas Head Coach Mario Sategna. "These young ladies have a very bright future on and off the track and now will get some much needed rest before resuming classes back here in Austin at the end of August."
