Longhorns fall to Northwestern 77-58 in Legends Classic semifinals.
BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Northwestern (3-1) handed the Longhorns their first loss of the season at Barclays Center, as No. 22/21 Texas (3-1) fell to the Wildcats on Monday night in the Legends Classic semifinals, 77-58.
Sophomore guard Tevin Mack shot 50 percent from beyond the arc and 5-of-9 overall for a team-high 18 points. Sophomore guard Kerwin Roach Jr. and freshman forward Jarrett Allen each snagged five rebounds in the contest. Sophomore Eric Davis Jr. and freshman Andrew Jones each contributed nine points in the defeat.
Northwestern junior guard Bryant McIntosh led the Wildcats with 20 points and five assists. McIntosh was one of four Wildcat players to score in double digits.
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead, piecing together an 11-0 run in the first three minutes. Mack snapped the Longhorns' scoring drought with a corner three at 16:11, trimming the Northwestern lead to eight (11-3).
The Longhorns chipped away at the Northwestern advantage over the next few possessions, embarking upon a 10-2 run that culminated in a Roach free throw to complete a three-point play. The stretch brought the Longhorns to within two (17-15) with 9:43 left in the half.
Northwestern countered with a 3-pointer to extend its lead, but Davis drained a shot from beyond the arc and then followed with a layup to even the score at 20-20 just a minute later.
Texas earned its first lead of the game off a trey from Mack, putting the Longhorns up 23-22 with 7:07 remaining. Mack would tack on another three soon after, but the Longhorns were unable to find the basket in the final three minutes of the half. Meanwhile, the Wildcats poured in nine straight points en route to building a 34-26 lead at halftime.
The Wildcats came storming out of the gates to take a 44-27 lead after the first three minutes of the second half. Jones and Mack each contributed six points in the second half, but Northwestern maintained its double-digit lead for the remainder of the game, draining five 3-pointers in the second stanza.
Texas will play Colorado on Tuesday, Nov. 23 in the consolation game of the Legends Classic. Tip is set for 2:30 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPNU.
