AUSTIN, Texas – Sophomore guard/forward Tevin Mack had a team-high 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting and seven rebounds for the Longhorns, but it was not enough as UTA defeated Texas, 72-61, at the Frank Erwin Center on Tuesday night. Freshman forward Jarrett Allen recorded his second double-double of the season with 13 points and 12 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Kerwin Roach Jr. rounded out the three Longhorns scoring in double digits with 16 points on 8-of-14 shooting.
Kevin Hervey led the way for UTA (5-3) with a double-double of his own, scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 boards. After a shaky shooting performance to start the game, the Mavericks finished strong by shooting 57.1-percent from the field (16-of-28) in the second half to seal the win.
Texas (3-3) grabbed an early 12-4 lead following a breakaway dunk by Roach at the 11:43 mark. The Longhorns extended their lead to 19-10 following another dunk from freshman center James Banks with 7:09 remaining, their largest lead of the game. UTA made its first three of the game to start a 10-0 run and took a 30-27 lead into halftime, holding Texas scoreless in the final 3:20 of the half.
The Mavericks used a 10-2 run in the first 2:05 of the half to increase their lead to 40-29, forcing a Longhorns' timeout. An Allen layup with 13:00 remaining pulled Texas to within 44-35. UTA extended its lead to 51-41 following a layup from Jalen Jones at the 9:25 mark. UTA's lead never dipped below double digits for the remainder of the contest.
The Longhorns host Alabama at the Erwin Center on Friday, Dec. 2 in a non-conference matchup presented by Pest Management. Tip is set for 8:30 p.m. Central, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPNU.

Texas Postgame Quotes
Head Coach Shaka Smart
On the team's performance: I'm disappointed. First of all, I have to give credit to UT Arlington. They are a really good team. It's basically the same group of guys that came in and took us to overtime last year. Our guys knew coming in that they were a really good team, so I don't think for our players it was any type of surprise. I thought we had a good approach to start the game defensively. We really had some really good possessions at the beginning of the game. Obviously we struggled to shoot the ball throughout the game. I think sometimes what happens is when your offense isn't going the way you want it to go as a team or as an individual, sometimes there is a residual effect that it has on your defense and that is not acceptable. We have to get better with that and we will.
On the player's mentality: For us, six games into the season, we knew coming into the season there was going to need to be a great deal of growth. Going to New York, I think there were some guys on our team who thought it was going to come easier than it did. And then tonight, our guys understood the challenges UT Arlington presented. What happened was as the game went on, there was a sense among our guys and they were a little bit bummed that we weren't up more in the first half. And then at halftime it was a three-point game. But I went in the locker room and it came across like we were down by even more. As a team, we need to find a way to have more resolve. That's what we are going to have to do.
On lack of leadership on the team: I think for our team, it's like when things like that happen, you look at each other and look around and you need a guy or two to step forward and say this is not going to happen like this. We're going to change this and stem this tide. We're in a process of figuring out who that is. It's not an excuse, it's just kind of where we are right now. One of the things we are going to have to learn is until it becomes only about the guys around you and what goes into winning the game and not about anything else, then we're going to have struggles like we did tonight.
Freshman Forward Jarrett Allen
On UTA preventing the ball from going inside: You just have to hand it to them. They were playing good defense. We just have to work harder at it next time.
On what he can do to help the offense when the outside shots aren't falling: Just keep feeding them the ball. I know eventually the shots are going to fall for them. For me, I just have to play harder in certain situations and that will carry over to them.
On if the team is going through growing pains: It's hard to say. We have to grow from every experience. It's just one of those times we have to grow from.
Sophomore Guard Kerwin Roach Jr.
On the team's performance tonight: As a team, I say the first half we came out being aggressive, and it just kind of died down from there. It's something we need to work on and get better at.
On if it should have been a better result when the shots weren't falling: It should be a better result even though the shots aren't falling. We talked about it in the locker room, like what else can you do to get yourself going and get the team going. It's not just about you. I think that's one of our biggest problems early in the season, and we're going to get better at it. We have to.
On if it was an emotional hangover from New York: I wouldn't say it's a hangover. I just think we need to figure some things out. Like I said, it's early in the season. We've still got some things to figure out. We're a young team. It's not going to be created in one day, so we just have to keep working on it in practice.
UTA Postgame Quotes
UTA Head Coach Scott Cross
On the game: Very proud of our guys. We finally put it all together for two halves. These guys have been through a lot of adversity. Early on in the season we weren't playing the way we are capable of. We needed those learning lessons. I think our guys figured it out that we had to play together, that we had to be great on the boards, that we have to take good shots, that we have to have ball movement and player movement. They did those little things tonight and I'm very blessed to have this opportunity to coach this group of guys. This will definitely go down as one of the biggest wins in the history of our basketball program.
On Kevin Hervey: He is still coming back from his ACL. I think we saw glimpses tonight on what he is capable of doing and he is just going to continue to get better and better. I think this was probably one of his best all around games. I think he's starting to get confidence that his knee is going to hold up when he crashes the boards and rebounds. You could see the confidence when we posted him on the short corner, you could see his confidence when he hit those couple of shots down the stretch that were huge for us
On ranking this win: This is definitely number one on my last. Last year, Ohio State and Memphis were one and two easily but just the success Texas has had. They are the premier program in the state of Texas and to have the opportunity to come in here and overcome it and come away with a win, it's definitely number one on my list.
On the Texas team: I just think they are a young basketball team and they're going to get better. All of Coach Smart's teams get better as the season progresses. They are going to be really good by the time they get in conference. This is a little bit of adversity for them. Coach Smart is one of the best at rallying teams together and getting them on the same page. I think they are going to be a lot better as the season progresses and once they find their identity a little bit and get in a rhythm, they'll give people some problems.
On how they wanted to defend Texas: We wanted to defend inside outside. Anytime we play Texas they are going to have great posts and they are going to have a size advantage so you have to protect the paint. If they are shooting layups and their posts are turning around and scoring jump hooks or power layups on you, you have no chance. So even if they were hitting shots, we would still have to defend inside out. That was one of our Achilles heels last year, was not defending the three. We've been great at it this year and it carried over tonight.
Junior Forward Kevin Hervey
On playing for his teammates: When I first came back, I was trying to force the issue because of the accomplishments I had last year; but after talking to coach, he was saying to let the game flow throw me and flow through my teammates because whenever I make the game be easier for my teammates, the game becomes easier for me. So now every game from here on out and in practice, I look to play through my teammates and it opens up the floor for me.
On playing after ACL injury: You know any injury a person has, there is going to be some mental doubt but that's just a part of the progress. The process is to overcome the mental adversity because it hits you hard, especially after doing it twice. But as the days go by and the work I've been putting in, I'm getting way more confident.
Senior Guard Drew Charles
On beating Texas after last year's overtime game: To say the least, I'm over-ecstatic right now. It's a game I've been waiting three years to win. We were 0-11 coming into this game but now we're 1-11.
On being prepared for Texas' athleticism: Yes, they are a very athletic team but Coach prepared us for this. We played Arkansas, we played Minnesota, so length is always a problem but we were used to it because of the teams we played previously.
On shooting well this game: To be honest with you it's the confidence my teammates have in me. Coach Young said to stick shots so I know he has confidence in me to make shots.
