Texas freshmen Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito drop their first-round matches to top-five opponents, move on to the consolation singles draw.
FLUSHING, N.Y. – Texas freshmen Christian Sigsgaard and Yuya Ito suffered opening-round defeats and moved to the consolation singles draw Thursday afternoon on day one of the USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships. The event is the second of three national championship events on the annual college tennis calendar.
"Christian and Yuya came up a little short, but honestly I think we played against the two guys in the tournament who simply have the most firepower," UT head coach Michael Center said. "The guys did well in their matches today, but now we've got to get ready for a back draw (consolation draw). We're excited about getting started again tomorrow."
Sigsgaard, a newcomer from Denmark, took on fellow countryman Mikael Torpegaard, the tournament's top seed from Ohio State in the first round. Torpegaard took the first set 6-4 and yielded nothing further in the second while putting away a 6-4, 6-0 win. Sigsgaard, who earned his place at the National Indoors after winning 11 matches at the ITA All-American Championships, moves on to the tournament's consolation draw (next opponent TBD).
Ito met Georgia Tech's Chris Eubanks and gave the fifth-ranked Yellow Jacket quite a challenge in the opening round of the 32-player draw. Eubanks held off Ito for a 7-5 first-set win before the second set progressed to a tiebreak. Ito saved multiple match points and won the tiebreak by a 10-8 count to force a third set.
Eubanks, however, took a 3-0 third-set lead and never looked back on his way to a 6-2 third-set victory that closed out a match win over Ito.
