AUSTIN, Texas – Junior guard Ariel Atkins led all scorers with 13 points, and junior guard Brooke McCarty had a personal best six steals to lead the No. 8/6 Texas Longhorns over the Tarleton State TexAnns inside Gregory Gym on Sunday afternoon, 93-43.
This exhibition game marked the first meeting between the two teams since 1976 and the first time Texas had played inside Gregory Gym since Feb. 15, 1977.
"I thought we were aggressive offensively, seeking layups, seeking transition shots and did pretty good on the offensive boards," Texas head coach Karen Aston said. "This was a good game for us to show some situations where we've been talking about some things defensively, and this will give us some film on an opponent, instead of ourselves, where we can say this is the stuff we've been harping on to try to be better at."
Atkins complimented her 13 points with two assists and a steal for the game, while McCarty joined her in double-figures with 12 points and five assists. Junior forward Audrey-Ann Goudreau was two boards shy of a double-double in her Texas debut with 10 points and eight rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Joyner Holmes rounded out the Longhorns in the double figures with 11 points and five boards.
As a team, Texas connected on 53.9 percent (41-76) from the field while holding Tarleton State to a 26.1 shooting percentage (12-46). The Horns dominated nearly every category and controlled the paint by an impressive 64-8 margin.
Tarleton State was led by senior guard Bailey Wipff with nine points.
Tarleton State came out firing on all cylinders from behind the arc to start the game with a 6-of-9 effort. The TexAnns would lead by as many as five (14-9) before the Horns went on a 8-0 run highlighted by two three-point plays from Atkins and Holmes to gain the 17-14 edge at the 2:01 mark of the first. TSU continued to push back with two treys ending the quarter in the TexAnns favor, 22-21.
The Horns opened the second stanza on a commanding 16-0 run, holding the TexAnns to only five points for the quarter. Texas capitalized off 10 layups to extend their margin, heading into halftime with the 50-27 edge.
Texas came out in the third much like the previous quarter with an opening 14-0 rally to lead 64-27 at the 4:29 mark. The Longhorns defense continued to press, and Texas was able to hold Tarleton State to only 12 points over 20 minutes of play combining the second and third quarters of action.
Longhorns freshman guard Alecia Sutton came off the bench in the final quarter and wasted little time making an immediate impact, firing off two treys and a free throw to add seven points. Both teams would visit the charity stripe over the final minutes with two from a TexAnn ending Texas' 93-43 victory.
The Longhorns will begin their regular season on Monday, Nov. 14, as they travel to Palo Alto, Calif., to take on the Stanford Cardinal. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. CT, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN2.
