Two-time All-America senior Breaunna Addison is the first Longhorn to reach the 100-win milestone since Aeriel Ellis in 2012.
AUSTIN, Texas – Two-time All-America senior Breaunna Addison collected her 100th singles win as a Longhorn in No. 35 Texas' (9-5) 5-2 win over No. 36 Northwestern (5-8) Monday afternoon at Whitaker Tennis Courts.
"That's a really great number," Addison said. "I'm glad I was able to accomplish something like this, not just for me but for UT. Hopefully I've been able to get a couple of really big wins here and there for Texas, and I hope to add to that."
Addison is the first Longhorn to reach 100 singles wins at Texas since All-American Aeriel Ellis completed the feat in 2013.
Before picking up her milestone singles win, Addison teamed with sophomore Dani Wagland to post a 6-3 win over the Wildcats' Alex Chatt and Maddie Lipp at first doubles. Texas nailed down the doubles point with a win at third doubles where Chelsea Crovetti and Katie Poluta knocked off Brooke Rischbieth and Lee Or, 6-3.
Poluta staked Texas to a 2-0 match lead behind her 6-3, 6-1 win over Chatt at fourth singles. UT junior Neda Koprcina notched a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Alicia Barnett at second singles to push the Texas lead to 3-0 before freshman Daniella Roldan clinched the Texas team win with a 1-6, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Jillian Rooney at fifth singles.
Addison closed out the 5-2 Texas victory with her 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Erin Larner at first singles.
Texas resumes conference play this weekend when it hosts Oklahoma State (April 1) and Oklahoma (April 3).
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
Probably the biggest take-home for the coaches is it was definitely not our best tennis this year. I think, for whatever reason, we looked a little lackluster and tired out there and it wasn't our best tennis. But I will say this: this group, in terms of the character and toughness, has come a long way from the fall when we only had four or five players, and then certainly in the spring since we've gotten up to six or seven quality players.
Northwestern is a rough, tough team. They were beating on us pretty good in the first half of the singles there, and even though it wasn't our best tennis, hopefully that will change in a week or two weeks with some rest. But the character and the toughness to win a match like that, when it was really one of our poorer performances in terms of the quality of play, says a lot about the competitiveness and the toughness of the team.
