No. 8 Rowing starts strong at Clemson Invitational

Varsity eight boat wins its first heat, knocks off four top-20 opponents.
CLEMSON, S.C. – No. 8 Texas counted a win from its varsity eight boat and nine additional top-three finishes during a productive opening day of racing Saturday at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell.
The Longhorns opened with a promising result in their first race of the day, heat two of the varsity eight. Texas navigated the two-kilometer course in 6 minutes, 44.3 seconds and outdistanced second-place No. 10 Michigan by a boat length. The Wolverines clocked 6:48.0 for second place while No. 19 Syracuse took third at 6:50.4.
Texas logged second-place finishes during the morning session in the second varsity eight (6:59.5), second varsity four (7:42.5) and the third varsity eight (7:05.2) races.
Only Michigan surpassed the Horns in the second varsity eight and second varsity four races while No. 3 Virginia was first to the finish line in the third varsity eight. Texas welcomes the third-ranked Cavaliers for a session of head-to-head racing on Austin's Lady Bird Lake later this month.
In the evening session, Texas took second behind Virginia but finished well ahead of three-time defending NCAA champion Ohio State in the first heat of the varsity four. Virginia took the win at 7:19.7, and Texas finished closely behind at 7:22.6. Ohio State took third at 7:29.3.
The third varsity eight joined the varsity eight as a winning boat Saturday, as the 3V8 claimed heat one during the evening session at 6:51.3. Louisville took second at 6:56.8 while Syracuse settled for third at 7:00.0.
Texas took third (6:23.7) behind Ohio State (6:15.4) and Virginia (6:19.7) in its evening varsity eight race and again in the second varsity eight race.
The Longhorns compete in the Clemson Invite's final session on Sunday beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET.
