Longhorns drop the doubles point but produce four singles wins to close out the victory.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 25 Texas (14-6, 6-2 Big 12) dropped the doubles point but ran off four straight-sets singles wins and defeated Iowa State (13-7, 2-5 Big 12) by a 4-2 count Sunday afternoon at UT's Weller Indoor Tennis Center.
Iowa State won doubles contests at the first and second positions to win the doubles point. UT freshman Chelsea Crovetti evened the tally at one with her 6-2, 6-2 win over Liera Bender at sixth singles.
Texas assumed a 2-1 lead behind freshman Katie Poluta's 6-1, 6-1 win over Alejandra Galvis at third singles, but Iowa State answered at fourth singles, where Regina Espindola dealt UT freshman Daniella Roldan a 6-0, 7-6 defeat.
UT junior Neda Koprcina gave the Longhorns the lead for good by way of her 7-5, 6-3 win over Sami Budai at first singles. Sophomore Dani Wagland and senior Lana Groenvynck each stood within one game of clinching the team win for Texas, and it was Wagland who ultimately delivered the final victory.
The Australian finished off a 7-6 (4), 6-1 win over Liza Buss at second singles to clinch the 4-2 victory for Texas. Groenvynck's match was suspended given that the final match outcome had been determined.
Texas welcomes Baylor for Senior Day next Saturday (1 p.m.) at Westwood Country Club in Austin.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Howard Joffe
You definitely have to give some credit to Iowa State. They played with passion and purpose, and when they did that we probably did whatever the opposite is... certainly in the doubles. After losing the doubles point and having Breaunna Addison out for the singles, it suddenly became very hairy. I give our group all the credit in the world for hanging tough, fighting one-by-one and getting back to even, and then running out the winner. But the take-home point is that Iowa State did a fantastic job and I think our kids, more than anything, need a bunch of rest and not to see the coach for a while.
