AUSTIN, Texas – The final day of the 2016 Nike Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays was highlighted by several elite performances, as many athletes broke meet records, set Mike A. Myers Stadium records and hit Olympic Trials qualifying marks. It was the final of four days in the 2016 meet which saw a over 7,500 athletes – a record for the meet in its 89th season – compete inside of Myers Stadium on the campus of The University of Texas.
The highlight of the day saw Shawn Barber – 2015 NCAA Champion, Texas Relays record-holder and Mike A. Myers Stadium record-holder – set the top outdoor mark in the world so far in 2016 with a jump of 5.91m in the Men's Elite Pole Vault division. That mark set a new Texas Relays record and Stadium record, surpassing his mark of 5.90m from a season ago at The Relays. Both Melker Svard Jacobbson (Sweden) and Hiroui Ogita (Japan) both hit the 5.70m mark which is the IAAF Olympic qualifying mark.
Several Myers Stadium records were set on Saturday, as the athletes competed in beautiful conditions under sunny skies and mild temperatures. The boys 4x800 meter team from Houston Strake Jesuit rank a 7:41.58 to rewrite the record book. It was just shy of their Texas Relays record of 7:40.56 set in 1980.
New Texas Relays records were set in both the Girls 100 Meter Hurdles and the Men's Long Jump University Section A. In the Long Jump Jarvis Gotch won with a distance of 8.24m (27-00.50). His jump trumped Texas' Richard Duncan who had held the record of 8.23m since 1997.
Numerous USATF Olympic Trial standards were met throughout the fourth day of competition on Saturday. Former Longhorn Morgan Goodwin ran a 13.00 to win the Women's Invitational 100 Meter Hurdles. The time of 13.00 exactly matched the USATF qualifying mark. In the Women's Pole Vault University Section A, Auburn's Jesse James hit a mark of 4.40m which also matched the mark to qualify for USATF Olympic Trials this summer. Texas Longhorn Morolake Akinosun ran away from the field in the Women's 100 Meters with another USATF Olympic Trials qualifying mark of 11.07.
Throughout much of the weekend, the relays on the men's side were dominated by Texas A&M. That trend continued early on Saturday as the Aggies claimed both the Men's 4x800 Meters and the Men's 4x200 Meters. The Aggies' 4x800 time was 7:18.95 and was the second straight season in which they have won the event. In the 4x200, Texas A&M edged out LSU by just .03 seconds with a 1:21.11. It was A&M's sixth victory in the event at the Texas Relays since 2009.
