1. You Can't Do It Alone
No matter how smart, resilient, or talented you are - you will always be better when you do it together and allow people to help you. Adjusting to new situations is hard but is especially tough when you try to do it alone.
2. The Impression You Leave On People Will Open or Close Doors
I didn't realize this until midway through my college experience but when I did, the opportunities I was given changed. People like to help nice and courteous people. It's really that simple.
3. Don't Be Afraid to Fail
Push yourself. Failure is a neccessary evil. It is better to know your ceiling and break it than to live in a world of what ifs because you're scared to fail.
4. Don't Rely on Your Talent
I always hated the saying "Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard," but its true. It may not catch you now, but IT WILL CATCH YOU and you'll regret all the time you wasted coasting by.
5. Learn to Work Hard
Working hard is more than just doing a million reps. It's about work ethic and working smarter. These are learned habits.
6. Be Smart About Who You Involve Yourself With
That guy you mess with for a hot second freshman year, people will still remember senior year. Surround yourself with people that will challenge you, keep you grounded, and make you better.
7. Use Your Resources
When you get to college there will be so many things available to you. Use them and ask if you don't have something you need. You will play for four years, hopefully, and the school you choose will be happy, but will you?
8. Don't Go Crazy
This is the first time you have autonomy over your life. Make good decisions.
9. Be 15 Minutes Early
This is just a great habit. It keeps you on time and it tells people that you are interested and prepared.
10. Network - Branch Out
As an athlete you will find yourself around other athletes but branch out. Your university will be filled with intelligent and interesting people, make new friends. Also, on the practical side, you won't be an athlete forever so learning how to carry yourself and sell yourself in other arenas is really important.
