VALDIVIA, Chile — University of Texas freshman Jarrett Allen posted a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, while fellow UT freshman James Banks added nine rebounds and a game-high five blocked shots to lead Team USA (4-0) to an 88-48 victory against Brazil (2-2) in the semifinals of the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championship on Friday evening. With the victory, the Americans advance to the Gold Medal game against Canada (4-0) at 7:15 p.m. CT on Saturday, July 23.
Allen, who started the game, converted 5-of-10 field goals and 4-of-7 free throws and added one steal in 19 minutes. Banks also recorded two points in 14 minutes. Both Allen and Banks grabbed five offensive rebounds during the win. Texas coach Shaka Smart is serving as head coach for the USA team.
"I was really pleased with the second half," Smart said. "Our guys showed really good energy to start the second half and throughout the second half when we put different lineups in the game. I thought in the first half we were a little bit sluggish, and guys were just kind of playing to the level of the opponent. We don't want to do that. We want to play the best we can possibly play. I thought the second half was much more like that."
"We are getting better," Smart continued. "It is ready or not, here we come. Because the game is here, and we are excited to play for the gold medal. Canada is a good opponent, and I'm looking forward to playing against them."
