AUSTIN, Texas – As the world has been consumed with excitement for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, it is time for the track and field competition to begin. Friday marks the beginning of this portion of The Games and nine Longhorns are set to represent their countries.
U.S. Olympic Trials champion and lifetime Longhorn Michelle Carter will start things off for the Texas contingency on Friday. She will throw the shot put at 8:05 a.m. in the qualifying round in Group A. Throwers will get three throws during qualifying with marks of 18.40 meters or better automatically advancing to Friday night's final. After the auto marks, the filled will be filled with the remaining of the top 12. The final is set for 6:35 p.m. where if Carter can qualify, she will pursue her first Olympic medal. She finished fifth in London in 2012 and claimed gold this spring at the IAAF World Indoor Championships.
One more Longhorn will be in action on the opening day of track and field competition.
Distance runner Marielle Hall will take on the best in the world in the 10,000 meters. Her race will fire off at 8:10 a.m. Friday with a field of 37 runners chasing medal worthy finishes. Hall placed second at the U.S. Olympic Trials to earn her spot on Team USA. She also won an NCAA title in the 5,000 meters her senior season at Texas in 2014.
After no Longhorns compete on Saturday, former Texas standout Jamal Wilson will compete in the men's high jump qualifying round for his native Bahamas at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. If he can advance to the final, he will jump again on Tuesday evening.
Texas Associate Head Coach Tonja Buford-Bailey will begin coaching some of her athletes on Monday when rising senior Byron Robinson and 2015 grad Ashley Spencer compete in the preliminary heats of the 400 meter hurdles. Robinson runs at 7:35 a.m. in the men's competition and Spencer is set for a 6:15 p.m. race. Both finished second at the U.S. Olympic Trials in July. Semifinals for the 400 hurdles will be on Tuesday evening along with the men's high jump final.
Thursday has the potential to be a busy day for the Longhorns with finals for the 400 hurdles on the slate and two other events with members of the 2016 Texas squad competing taking place.
Morolake Akinosun is one of the six runners listed in Team USA's relay pool for the 4x100 meter relay. She could potentially run in the first round on Monday morning and see Texas teammate Robinson in the final later in that session if he can advance.
Ryan Crouser will throw in the men's shot put qualifying round at 7:55 a.m. Thursday. He won the U.S. Olympic Trials with a throw that was only two centimeters off the current world lead and one centimeter off the Trials record with a toss of 22.11 meters. He hopes to help Team USA put multiple athletes on the podium as the three throwers representing the U.S. in the event currently rank 1-2-4 in the world this year. If Crouser can advance to the final, he will throw again at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. The final of the women's 400 hurdles also is set to run during the Thursday evening session.
Relays will be on display for the Longhorns on Friday with the final of the women's 4x400 meter relay set to open the evening session. Courtney Okolo is listed among the runners in the relay pool for Team USA and her Texas teammate Chrisann Gordon is in the relay pool for Jamaica. The Friday schedule begins at 6:10 p.m. It will conclude with the final of the women's 4x100 relay.
Saturday will see the final event for the Longhorns with the final of the women's 4x400 set to close out the day at 6:10 p.m.
Texas Head Coach Mario Sategna also is in Rio working for Team USA. He is the Men's Assistant Coach for Throws and helping coordinate logistics with the athletes and their personal coaches to ensure their daily schedules run smoothly and the athletes have everything they need to be ready for competition.
