RIO DE JANEIRO – The relays took center stage at the Olympic Games on Friday night during track and field action. Two Longhorns helped their respective teams advance to the final of the 4x400 meter relay and another received a gold medal for her role during the preliminaries of the 4x100.
The night closed with Team USA winning gold in the women's 4x100 meter relay. Morolake Akinosun did not run during the final for the U.S., but she is eligible to receive a medal by being a member of the relay team during the preliminary heats on Thursday. Her medal is the ninth overall and eighth gold for a Texas Longhorn during the Rio Olympic Games.
Running events started on Friday with the prelims of the 4x400 relay.
Courtney Okolo ran the opening leg for Team USA and helped the American win their heat with a time of 3:21.42. She ran her leg in 50.75 and handed the baton off with a significant lead.
Chrisann Gordon ran the third leg of the 4x400 for Jamaica to also help her team win its heat to automatically advance to the final. The Jamaicans clocked in at 3:22.38 for the No. 2 time of the prelims. Gordon ran her leg in 50.58.
The final of the women's 4x400 is slated for 8 p.m. CT. Teams USA and Jamaica will run next to each other at least for the first leg with the Americans in Lane 6 and Jamaica inside them in Lane 5.
The meet will be broadcast live on NBC beginning at 7 p.m. with finals in seven events scheduled.
