Texas completes Rio Olympics with 13 total medals, including 10 gold

If competing as a separate country, current and former UT athletes would have ranked in a tie for seventh in number of gold medals earned in Rio.
AUSTIN — Current and former University of Texas student-athletes accounted for a total of 13 medals, including 10 gold, during the 2016 Rio Olympics. If these athletes were competing as a separate country, Texas would have ranked in a tie for seventh place among all nations in the number of gold medals earned and tied for 20th in the number of total medals won.
UT's total of 10 gold medals tied for the second-most number of golds won by the Longhorns in an Olympiad. Texas won a record 11 golds at the 2004 Athens Games and also claimed 10 golds at the 2008 Beijing Games and the 2000 Sydney Games.
The success rate in winning medals by the Longhorns Olympians was simply staggering. UT had 25 total medal opportunities from its representatives and brought home 13 medals, better than a 50 percent mark for its entire roster in Rio.
Texas' sweep of the men's and women's track and field shot put competition was historical. Michelle Carter and Ryan Crouser not only won the events, but both set American records in the process. Crouser was the Longhorns' first-ever individual men's track and field event Olympic Champion. He and Carter also became the only shot putters from the same country ever to sweep gold medals in the same Olympic Games.
Kevin Durant (Men's Basketball) was the Longhorns' only repeat gold medalist, and UT had a member (Rachael Adams, bronze) of the medal-winning USA Volleyball team for the second straight Olympics. Courtney Okolo's gold as a member of the USA's 4x400-meter relay team marked the fourth consecutive Games that Texas has had a member of that Olympic Champion relay squad (Sanya Richards-Ross in 2012 and 2008, Richards-Ross and Moushaumi Robinson in 2004).
A total of 20 current or former University of Texas student-athletes and five coaches with ties to UT Athletics participated in the Rio Olympics. All told, UT athletes and coaches competed in 10 different sports (men's basketball, men's golf, women's rowing, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's tennis, men's track and field, women's track and field, men's volleyball and women's volleyball) and represented seven different countries (The Bahamas, Jamaica, Mexico, Singapore, South Africa, United States and Venezuela).
In its storied Olympics history, current and former UT student-athletes have now produced a total of 144 medals, including 83 gold, 38 silver and 23 bronze.
