AUSTIN, Texas – No. 4 Texas (2-0) opened its dual-match schedule with a pair of 7-0 wins over UTSA (0-1) and Abilene Christian (0-1) Thursday at UT's Weller Indoor Tennis Center on the grounds of The University of Texas Golf Club.
Texas only dropped one set in the opening match against UTSA. After the Longhorns claimed the doubles point with a win in all three matches, redshirt sophomore Julian Zlobinsky put the first singles point on the board in commanding 6-0, 6-1 fashion over Igor Cantanhede at fourth singles.
Sophomore Rodrigo Banzer and senior George Goldhoff both held off their opponents with straight-sets victories at the No. 3 and No. 2 singles slots to secure the match for Texas at 4-0. The remaining three matches were decided in tiebreakers.
After capturing the first set 6-4, sophomore Colin Markes dropped the second set to Leon Hein, 6-4, which forced a 10-point, third-set tiebreaker. Markes prevailed, 10-5.
Junior John Mee easily won his first set over Patrick Poestinger, 6-1, but the second set progressed to a tiebreaker. Mee held off Poestinger, 9-7, to close out the fifth singles match.
Sixth-ranked freshman Christian Sigsgaard secured the shutout for the Horns against Kai Breitbach at No. 1 singles. After picking up the first set 6-2, another second set tiebreaker ensued with Sigsgaard cleaning up the 7-4 victory.
In the evening contest against Abilene Christian, Texas led 1-0 after taking two of the three doubles matches. Ito notched the second point for the Longhorns with a strong 6-2, 6-0 showing over Nico Agritelley at the second singles, and it continued to be a sea of burnt orange from that point forward.
Zlobinsky picked up a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles over Henry Adams and Telles defeated Hunter Holman at fifth singles (6-2, 6-3) to record the clinching point for Texas.
Scott closed out his third singles match over Jonathan Sheehy in a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Soon after, Mee finished off his No. 6 singles match against Paul Michael Domanski in 6-3, 6-2 fashion to make it 6-0, Texas.
ACU's Josh Sheehy managed to take the first set over Sigsgaard 6-3, but the Texas freshman, trailing 6-5 in the second set, won his next service game at-love to force a tiebreaker. Sigsgaard saved a match point and won the tiebreak 9-7 to force a 10-point match tiebreak in the third set, where he prevailed 10-6 and handed Texas its second sweep of the day.
The Longhorns will return to action on Sunday, Jan. 15 as they travel to Dallas to take on SMU. First serve is set for 4:30 p.m.
