AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Joyner Holmes picked up her third double-double of the season and senior Brianna Taylor tied two career highs as No. 12/14 Texas Women's Basketball (13-4, 7-0 Big 12 Conference) defeated No. 20/20 Oklahoma (14-5, 5-2 Big 12 Conference) inside the Erwin Center on Tuesday night, 86-68.
With the win, Texas extends its win streak to 11 games and is off to the best Big 12 start in program history.
Texas leads the all-times series over Oklahoma, 29-24, and has won five of the last seven meetings.
"It was a really competitive game from the tip," said Texas head coach Karen Aston. "It was two competitive teams that really wanted to win, and we made some plays down the stretch and had some players make big buckets for us."
Holmes's double-double included 20 points and 10 rebounds. Taylor tied her career highs for both rebounds and assists with 11 and four, respectively, and brought down 10 boards in the first half alone.
Junior Ariel Atkins totaled 19 points on the evening behind a 9-13 effort from the field. She added four rebounds and a game-high three steals.
Junior Brooke McCarty posted four triples en route to 16 points, and sophomore Lashann Higgs put up 15 points and four rebounds to complete the Texas players in the double figures.
As a team, Texas shot 49.3 percent (34-69) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-12) from downtown. Oklahoma was limited to a 35.0 shooting percentage (21-60) on the game.
The Sooners were led by junior Vionise Pierre-Louis with 16 points and seven rebounds.
It was back and forth in the opening frame with neither team leading by more than four points. After the score tied three times, Texas utilized a 6-2 push to close the first quarter with the 23-19 edge.
The Longhorns continued to drive forward in the second stanza, but back-to-back Sooner treys closed the gap to 32-29 Texas at the 2:32 mark. The Horns responded with the next eight points, including a buzzer-beater from Higgs, to end the half with the 40-29 advantage.
Oklahoma held a perfect 8-for-8 mark from the charity stripe and outscored Texas 22-16 in the third. The Horns found their bright spot behind two more triples from McCarty and a huge block off the glass from Holmes to close the quarter, 56-51 Texas.
The Sooner offense held off two Texas advances in the fourth to make it a two-point game (66-64 UT) with 4:41 remaining in regulation. The Longhorns closed on a 20-4 stretch to clinch the game, 86-68.
