AUSTIN, Texas – Freshman Joyner Holmes led all scorers with 18 points as No. 15/17 Texas Women's Basketball (10-4, 4-0 Big 12 Conference) defeated TCU (8-7, 0-4 Big 12 Conference) inside the Erwin Center on Saturday night, 83-54.
The victory marked head coach Karen Aston's 200th career win as a head coach. She is only one win away from 100 at the helm for the Longhorns with a 99-50 (.683) record.
Tonight also marked the largest margin of victory for the Longhorns in Big 12 play since Texas won by 37 at Kansas (75-38) on January 13, 2016.
Texas leads the all-times series over TCU, 39-2, and boasts a perfect 19-0 record inside the Drum.
"I was very pleased with the way we played tonight and our effort from start to finish," said Aston.
Along with her 18 points, Holmes added eight rebounds and two steals on her night. Junior Brooke McCarty totaled 16 points along with five boards and assists, while junior Ariel Atkins notched 14 points with a game-high four steals.
Senior Kelsey Lang brought down a career-high 14 boards coupled with six points and a game-high three blocks.
As a team, Texas shot 50.0 percent (34-68) from the field while holding TCU to a 29.8 shooting percentage (17-57). This is the fourth game this season the Horns have shot at or above the .500 mark.
The Longhorns outrebounded the Frogs, 49-30, and have won the battle of the boards in 13 of 14 contests this season.
TCU was led by junior Toree Thompson with 12 points.
Although never relinquishing the lead in the game, the Longhorns found themselves in a tight battle with the Frogs in the first quarter. TCU fought off a 14-6 Texas margin and ended the quarter with the first triple of the game, but Texas held the 16-13 edge.
The Longhorns only allowed eight points in the second quarter, taking their largest lead of the half (30-18) after a freshman Alecia Sutton jumper with 1:22 on the game clock. TCU knocked down a triple to slash into the deficit, but two from the line from freshman Jada Underwood sent Texas into the half, 32-21.
The Horns made it a 20-point game (43-23) after a McCarty trey at the 6:32 mark of the third quarter en route to a high-scoring stanza. Holmes accounted for eight of Texas's 24 points in the third quarter, and the Longhorns held the 56-34 advantage headed into the closer.
Texas continued to drive forward in the fourth quarter, taking its largest lead, a 32-point spread, after a Sutton jumper with 3:24 remaining in the contest (75-43 Horns). A layup from freshman Lashann Higgs sealed the deal for Texas, 83-54.
Next on the slate, Texas will host Oklahoma State on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Tip is set for 7 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally on Longhorn Network.
