AUSTIN, Texas – In the third game to go into overtime this season, The University of Texas (3-4, 2-2) fell to No. 10/11 Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1), 13-10, at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The Texas defense continued to shine for the Longhorns, holding Oklahoma State, which entered the game with the second-best scoring average in the FBS at 48.8 points per game, to a season-low 13 points and snapping a nation-leading 35-game streak in which they had scored 20 points or more.
Junior linebacker Malik Jefferson led the team with 14 tackles, while junior cornerback Kris Boyd added 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries. Junior linebacker Breckyn Hager collected a career-best two sacks in the game.
The Cowboys scored first, closing out a 10-play, 96-yard drive with a 7-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead with 4:51 remaining in the first quarter.
The Cowboys utilized a hurry-up offense on their next possession, moving the ball quickly to the UT 7-yard line as time expired in the first quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, senior defensive lineman Poona Ford stripped Cowboy running back Justice Hill for a 7-yard loss, where it was recovered by junior defensive back DeShon Elliott.
Texas took over at their own 14 and on the first play from scrimmage freshman running back Daniel Young caught a pass from freshman quarterback Ehlinger in the backfield and was quickly dropped for a 6-yard loss. On the next play, junior wide receiver John Burt caught a pass at the OSU 15, where he tightroped the right sideline before sprinting downfield for 90 yards before being brought down at the UT 2-yard line. The 90-yard reception was the sixth-longest in Texas Football history and longest non-offensive pass play. Ehlinger closed out the drive a play later with a 2-yard touchdown run to even the score 7-7, where it would remain entering the half.
The Horns took the lead on the first possession of the second half on a 22-yard field goal by Joshua Rowland, giving UT the lead at 10-7. Texas twice kept the drive alive with conversions on third-and-1, while Ehlinger completed 3-of-4 passes on the drive, including a 23-yard pass to junior wide receiver Jerrod Heard.
Ehlinger completed 22-of-36 passes for 241 yards in the game, connecting with 12 different receivers.
Oklahoma State tied it, 10-10, with a 19-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. The Cowboys had set themselves up with a first-and-goal situation at the UT 1-yard line, but after being stuffed at the line on two carries, junior defensive back Holton Hill broke up a pass in the end zone, forcing the high-powered Oklahoma State offense to settle for the field goal.
The Cowboys entered play with the top-rated offense in the nation, averaging 610.7 yards of total offense and 411.2 passing yards per game, but the Horns held them to 428 and 282 yards, respectively.
In the first overtime, Oklahoma State hit a 34-yard field goal to go ahead 13-10.
Texas moved as close as the OSU 6-yard line on their drive, but on third-and-4, an Ehlinger pass sailed high and was intercepted by a Cowboy defender in the end zone to end the game.
Junior punter Michael Dickson had another outstanding day, averaging 50.9 yards on 11 punts, including two over 60 yards, with five landing inside the 20.
The Longhorns are on the road the next two weeks, starting with a trip to Waco for a Big 12 matchup with the Baylor Bears on Saturday, Oct. 28. Kickoff at McLane Stadium is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. CT.
