Three Longhorns will compete in the main singles draw beginning Wednesday at Hilton Head.
PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif. - Texas sophomore Petra Granic dropped a tight three-set match and was eliminated from the qualifying draw Tuesday at the ITA All-American Championships. The event is the first of three major championships on the college tennis calendar.
The 39th-ranked Granic met North Carolina's 65th-ranked Makenna Jones for a second straight match after going head-to-head last month at Furman. Jones took the first set 6-3, but Granic stayed in the match by taking the second set, 6-4. Jones won the decisive third set 6-3 to advance to the second round of qualifying.
"This was an incredibly tough match today for Petra," said UT assistant coach Taylor Fogleman. "Unfortunately, she sustained a small injury after gaining a lead at the start of the third set. But, she fought like a champion all the way to the bitter end and almost turned the match in her favor. We could not be prouder of her effort, and we know her best tennis is ahead."
Next up for the Longhorns is a USTA singles event getting underway Wednesday in Hilton Head, South Carolina, where Texas sophomores Bianca and Anna Turati plus freshman Bojana Markovic will compete in the main draw.
