Men's Basketball tops Butler in opening round of PK80 Invitational, 61-48

PORTLAND, Ore. – Sophomore guard Andrew Jones matched his season high with 16 points to lead Texas Men's Basketball (4-0) past Butler (3-2), 61-48 in the opening round of the PK80-Phil Knight Invitational on Thursday night at Veterans Memorial Coliseum.
Jones converted 7-13 field goals and grabbed four rebounds in the victory. Junior forward Dylan Osetkowski added 12 points and seven rebounds, while freshman point guard Matt Coleman registered nine assists against one turnover along with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 3 steals. Freshman forward Mohamed Bamba tallied 6 points and a game-high 12 boards and 4 blocks.
As a team, the Longhorns dished out 14 assists against 11 turnovers and posted a 14-2 advantage in fast-break points. The UT defense limited Butler to 48 points on 32.8% FG shooting (19-58), including a 27.3% mark (6-22) from three-point range.
Jones recorded the first 10 points for the Longhorns while hitting 4-5 field goals, including 2-3 from deep, and helped Texas build an early 10-6 lead with 11:39 left in the opening period. After a Butler three trimmed the margin to one (10-9), UT held the Bulldogs scoreless over the next six minutes and built a five-point (16-11) advantage with 4:37 remaining in the half.
UT closed out the first-half scoring with a jumper from Jones at the one-minute mark to send Texas into the break with a 22-19 lead.
The Longhorns held Butler to 24.1% FG shooting (7-29) in the opening half, including a 27.3% mark (3-11) from beyond the arc. Jones finished the first half with 12 points.
Butler opened the second half with a jumper to pull within one (22-21), but the Longhorns responded with an 11-2 run and extended their lead to 10 points (33-23) with 14:42 left after an Eric Davis Jr. three-pointer forced Butler to take a timeout.
The Longhorns' margin was trimmed to three (47-44) with 4:11 remaining, but Osetkowski scored the next six points for UT and junior guard Kerwin Roach II finished a layup to extend the lead to 55-46 at the 1:47 mark. Texas closed the contest scoring the final six points to earn the 61-48 victory.
Kamar Baldwin led Butler with 15 points.
Texas advances to the semifinals of the Motion Bracket in the PK80 and will face No. 1/1 Duke on Friday. Tip-off is slated for 4:30 p.m. CT at the Moda Center, and the game will be nationally televised on ESPN.
