Dylan Osetkowski registered a season-high 19 points to pace the Longhorns in the PK80 Invitational semifinal loss.
PORTLAND, Ore. – Junior forward Dylan Osetkowski tallied a season-high 19 points, but Texas Men's Basketball (4-1) fell in overtime to No. 1/1 Duke (7-0), 85-78, in the semifinals of the PK80-Phil Knight Invitational on Friday night at the Moda Center.
Osetkowski added 7 rebounds and a season-high 5 assists in 44 minutes of action, while junior guard Kerwin Roach II recorded 18 points on 7-9 shooting from the field.
Sophomore guard Andrew Jones tied his season high with 16 points and dished out a team-high 6 assists against just 1 turnover, while freshman forward Mohamed Bamba contributed 10 rebounds, 9 points and 2 blocks.
The Longhorns held Duke to 3-18 shooting from three and forced 13 Blue Devil turnovers in the game. UT shot 43 percent (30-70) from the field and held the lead for 37 minutes of the contest.
The Longhorns built an early 12-4 lead at the 16:45 mark behind five points from Jones. Bamba and sophomore guard Jacob Young converted on back-to-back field-goals to help Texas grab an eight-point (24-16) advantage with 11:13 remaining in the first half.
With just under five minutes left in the half, Roach connected on a three-pointer to stretch the Texas lead to double-digits (34-22) for the first time in the game. Roach finished a one-handed dunk over a Blue Devil player with 44 seconds remaining, and the Longhorns headed to halftime with a 43-31 lead.
Jones and Roach led the Longhorns with 10 points each in the first half. Osetkowski chipped in with six points, four boards and four assists. Texas committed just three turnovers in the first half and held the Blue Devils to just 1-6 (17 percent) shooting from behind-the-arc.
After surrendering the first five points of the half, UT responded with a quick 6-2 spurt to push the lead back to 11 (49-38) with 16:04 remaining. Osetkowski poured in seven-straight points for the Longhorns to fuel an 11-2 run over a two-minute stretch to extend the lead to 16 points (64-48) at the 10:25 mark.
Over the next eight minutes, Duke utilized a 22-6 run to tie the game at 70 with two minutes to play. The Blue Devils converted a three-point play and Duke held its first lead (73-72) of the second half with 32 seconds left in regulation. Matt Coleman was fouled on the next Texas possession and converted 1-of-2 from the line to tie the game again at 73. Duke missed a tip-in attempt before the buzzer, and the Longhorns headed to overtime for the first time this season.
Duke scored the first five points of the extra period and outscored the Longhorns 12-5 in overtime en route to the 85-78 victory. Marvin Bagley III paced the Blue Devils with 34 points.
Texas will face the loser of No. 7/7 Florida and No. 17/17 Gonzaga in the third-place game of the Motion Bracket on Sunday. Tip is set for Noon CT at the Moda Center, and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN.
