Longhorns rally from behind on the final event of the meet to knock off the Aggies.
COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 2 Texas (3-0) trailed late in the contest, but the Longhorns won the meet-deciding 400-yard freestyle relay to finish off a 151.5-148.5 victory at No. 5 Texas A&M Friday evening at A&M's Student Rec Center Natatorium.
Texas opened the meet by posting a one-two finish in the three-meter diving event. Sophomore Alison Gibson, the 2017 NCAA champion on one-meter, took top honors on three-meter with 329.33 points. Junior Meghan O'Brien took a close second with 327.30 points, while redshirt junior Murphy Bromberg placed fourth at 311.18.
The Aggies claimed the 200-yard medley relay by a fraction of a second before Texas posted a one-two finish atop the 1,000 freestyle. Bahamian Olympian Joanna Evans took the win at 9:44.53 while freshman Evie Pfeifer followed with a second-place time of 9:49.03. Evans returned just moments to complete an impressive double with her win in the 200 freestyle at 1:46.72. Junior Quinn Carrozza placed second at 1:46.80.
UT sophomore Claire Adams tied for top honors in the 100 backstroke at 52.92. Junior Olivia Anderson posted the top time for the Longhorns in the 100 breaststroke at 1:01.19. Junior Remedy Rule recorded an impressive mid-season time on her way to victory in the 200 butterfly at 1:55.79. Sophomore Lauren Case, an All-American in the event last season, took third at 1:57.69.
Texas A&M claimed the 50 freestyle, though senior Rebecca Millard helped stave off the Aggies' points gain with her second-place mark of 22.68. The teams took a quick break from swimming to complete the one-meter diving event, where UT's Bromberg was victorious with 296.40 points.
A&M chipped into the Longhorns' lead by taking the top three spots in the 200 breaststroke, but Evans notched her third win of the night in the 500 freestyle at 4:53.32. Pfeifer added a runner-up finish in 4:46.88.
A&M kept things close with its win in the 100 butterfly. Rule posted Texas' top finish in second at 53.42 while freshman Emily Reese took third at 53.97. The Aggies took a 142.5-140.5 lead after claiming the top-three spots atop the 400 IM. As a result, the victor of the meet's final event – with 11 points to the winner of the 400 freestyle relay – would win the meet.
Texas delivered the relay win and the meet victory, as Adams, junior Brooke Hansen, Rule and Millard teamed up to win in 3:15.46, over two seconds clear of the Aggies.
The Longhorns resume dual-meet competition next Friday at N.C. State.
