Lady Vols hand Longhorns first loss of the season

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - No. 2 Texas fell to No. 11 Tennessee on Sunday afternoon after a hard-fought and physical contest between both teams. The Lady Vols pulled away in the final quarter to end the game 82-75.
The Longhorns had 40 points in the paint, with 16 points coming from the bench. The team's total free throw percentage was 84.2 percent. Senior Ariel Atkins scored 21 points and tabbed four rebounds and three steals. Junior Lashann Higgs followed second in the total points count with 15.
The first points of the game came from Tennessee freshman Rennia Davis on the charity stripe. The Lady Vols scored four more points before Texas answered with a jumper from junior Jatarie White. Tennessee pulled away again, but Atkins sunk both of her free throws to bring the score to 12-5, Tennessee. After some back-and-forth play, the quarter ended 16-11, Tennessee. The largest lead came in this quarter, with Tennessee holding onto 10 points at 2:52 remaining.
The Longhorns were able to close the gap in the second period as Higgs opened with a lay-up and White quickly followed with her own, bringing the points margin to five. Texas was able to score six unanswered points ahead of the final minute. Before heading into the locker room, sophomore Jada Underwood sank two free throws to bring the score to 29-27, with the Lady Vols still leading.
After the break, a jumper from Atkins tied the game 29-29, where it sat for over two minutes. Tennessee took back the lead with a a three-pointer from freshman Evina Westbrook. Senior Audrey-Ann Caron-Goudreau sunk a jumper at 6:17 to bring the score 36-31, with Tennessee still in the lead. At the media timeout, Tennessee led 39-34. The quarter closed out at 48-44, the Lady Vols holding onto the lead.
The last quarter was the highest-scoring period, with Texas and Tennessee shooting 31 and 34 within the 10 minutes, respectively. Higgs nailed back-to-back baskets at 6:47, bringing the score to 52-51. Texas trailed closely for the quarter, but the Lady Vols separated themselves at 33 seconds to go, scoring five points off of free throws from senior Jaime Nared and Davis.
Texas will return to action at home on Wednesday, December 13th at 7 p.m. CT against the Northwestern State Lady Demons. The game will be broadcast on 105.3 FM in Austin or at texassports.com/audio and televised on the Longhorn Network.
