UT redshirt junior Murphy Bromberg takes momentum into Sunday’s three-meter final.
GREENSBORO, N.C. – Texas redshirt junior Murphy Bromberg put together a strong list of final-round dives and placed third in the women's platform final Saturday at the 2017 USA Diving Winter National Championships.
Bromberg, an All-American for the Longhorns on platform, totaled 909.95 points through the preliminary, semifinal and final rounds of competition to place third overall in the women's platform final.
A former World Championships qualifier for Team USA, Bromberg totaled a meet-best 75.20 points on her fourth-round dive, an inward three-and-a-half somersault. Bromberg joins teammate Meghan O'Brien in the women's three-meter final on Sunday.
Elsewhere at the USA Diving Winter Nationals, UT diving coach Matt Scoggin was honored for the third time in the last four years with the Mike Peppe Award as the nation's top senior-level diving coach. Under Scoggin's tutelage, Grayson Campbell and Alison Gibson swept the one-meter boards over the summer at the 2017 USA Diving National Championships, where Longhorn Aquatics won the team title.
Gibson and Campbell joined Meghan O'Brien and Mark Anderson to compete at the World University Games over the summer, and Gibson qualified for the World Championships, as well.
Bromberg was recognized with the Wendy Wyland Award presented in memory of the late 1984 Olympic bronze medalist. The award goes to a diver who has displayed a love for the sport, a strong work ethic, exceptional competitive ability, courage in dealing with adversity, an ability to come back from injury, a never-quit attitude and performances beyond expectations.
