Bahamian Olympian Joanna Evans takes down UT’s 32-year-old school mark in the 1,650 freestyle.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas junior Joanna Evans took down a second school mark in the last three nights and broke the oldest school record in the book to cap a sensational weeklong stint at the Texas Invitational.
Evans, who represented The Bahamas at the 2016 Olympic Games, shattered UT's 32-year-old school record in the 1,650-yard freestyle Saturday night with a winning mark of 15 minutes, 51.74 seconds. The swim eclipsed the previous school mark of 15:53.85 set by Tiffany Cohen at the 1985 NCAA Championships. It also rewrote Evans' own Big 12 record of 15:54.46 from the NCAA Championships last March.
Evans takes down a decades-old school record for the second time in as many seasons. She rewrote UT's 25-year-old school record in the 500 freestyle last February at the Big 12 Championships.
Junior Quinn Carrozza produced a lifetime best in the 200 backstroke championship final and clocked 1:53.24 for second place. Sophomore Kaitlin Harty joined Carrozza in the final and took fifth at 1:55.06. Texas' Maxine Wolters, a freshman from Germany, won the consolation final at 1:55.58.
Sophomore Claire Adams finished a strong week of individual performances with a big swim in the 100 freestyle. The Carmel, Indiana, native dipped under 48 seconds for the first time and took second in the championship final at 47.81. All-America senior Rebecca Millard took third at 48.14, and junior Anelise Diener placed seventh at 49.38. Junior Brooke Hansen won the consolation final at 48.88, and Evans won the "C" final in 49.32.
Former Longhorn Madisyn Cox, a multiple All-American for Texas in the 200 breaststroke, won the same event Saturday evening in 2:06.17. Freshman Evie Pfeifer clocked 2:13.57 for sixth in the final after finishing a 1,650 freestyle in 16:13.68 during the afternoon heats. That swim stood for sixth place in the final 1,650 freestyle standings.
Junior Remedy Rule led the Texas contingent in the 200 butterfly championship final with a third-place swim of 1:55.25. Sophomore Lauren Case placed fifth in the same final at 1:56.51.
Texas capped the night with a convincing win in the 400 freestyle relay, as Millard, Adams, Rule and Hansen finished in 3:12.84, an NCAA "A" cut good for No. 3 in the nation this season and No. 6 all-time at UT.
