Women's Basketball's Holmes named espnW National Player of the Week

Holmes averaged 16.5 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game this past week.
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Freshman Texas guard/forward Joyner Holmes has been named the espnW National Player of the Week, it was announced on Monday, for her performances in the No. 11 Longhorns' wins against No. 2 Baylor and Kansas this past week.
Charlie Creme, Graham Hays and Mechelle Voepel each vote to determine espnW's national player of the week, which is awarded every week of the women's college basketball season.
Holmes recorded a double-double in both games on the week and averaged a double-double with 16.5 points per game and 11.5 rebounds per game. She was her team's leader in both scoring and rebounding on the week. Holmes shot 54.5 percent from the field and 75 percent from the free-throw line. Holmes now has seven double-doubles on the year.
The 85-79 win at No. 2 Baylor last Monday snapped a 14-game winning streak by the Lady Bears in the series. It also ended Baylor's 54-game home winning streak.
In the victory against Baylor, Holmes scored 18 points and brought down a game-high 10 rebounds. She also blocked two shots, came up with two steals and dished out two assists in a career-high 35 minutes of action. She shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field and was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Holmes had six of her 18 points in a critical fourth quarter for the Longhorns.
Holmes was clutch down the stretch in the win at No. 2 Baylor. With the score tied at 76-76 and 59 seconds remaining, Holmes connected on a lay-up to give the Longhorns the lead for good. On the next possession, she snagged a defensive rebound on an Alexis Jones miss, and then calmly drained two free-throws with 28 seconds left.
In Saturday's 75-42 win against Kansas, Holmes scored 15 points and brought down 13 rebounds – both game highs – for her second consecutive double-double. She shot 60 percent (6-of-10) from the field and dished out three assists in 23 minutes of action. Holmes' 13 rebounds led a 59-rebound performance by the Texas team, which tied for the ninth-best single-game team rebounding performance in program history.
On the season, Holmes is the Big 12 Conference freshman leader in scoring (12.5 ppg), rebounding (8.0 rpg) and double-doubles (7).
Holmes and the No. 11 Longhorns return to action this evening when they face No. 5 Florida State. Tip-off in the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center in Tallahassee, Fla., is slated for 6 p.m. CT and the game will be televised nationally by ESPN2.
