Longhorns host home opener next Saturday against No. 17 Miami.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. – No. 18 Texas (1-2) picked up a singles win from freshman Petra Granic, but No. 13 Michigan (4-0) won the doubles point and five singles matches and registered a 6-1 win over the Longhorns Sunday at Michigan's Varsity Tennis Center.
The Wolverines won doubles contests at the first and second positions to win the doubles point and assume a 1-0 match lead. Michigan picked up a 6-4, 6-0 win from Chiara Lommer over UT junior Dani Wagland at fifth singles to push its lead to 2-0.
Michigan's Brienne Minor outlasted UT's 55th-ranked senior Neda Koprcina, 6-1, 7-5 at second singles before Granic put the Longhorns on the board with her 6-3, 7-5 win over Mira Ruder-Hook at fourth singles. Granic is unbeaten in three dual matches this season.
The Wolverines' Kate Fahey clinched the team win for Michigan with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Texas freshman Bianca Turati at first singles. Michigan added a win at sixth singles, and UT's Anna Turati pushed UM's 60th-ranked Alex Najarian to the brink of defeat at third singles but fell by the slimmest of margins in a 10-point third set super-tiebreaker.
"It's never fun as a coach to recognize that we were just outplayed today," said UT head coach Howard Joffe. "Michigan was skilled, motivated and smart. They deserve credit. I wasn't displeased with our ladies or our tennis. We have a very young team and an inexperienced group that requires more of these viciously competitive matches. I know we will all profit from today, and we will keep getting tougher."
Texas plays host to No. 17 Miami (Fla.) in its home opener next Saturday (Feb. 11) at the Whitaker Tennis Courts in Austin. First serve is set for 11 a.m. CT.
