Granic, Turati post significant wins at Stanford

Freshman Petra Granic upsets a top-10 player while freshman Bianca Turati takes down a top-65 opponent.
PALO ALTO, Calif. – Texas freshmen Petra Granic and Bianca Turati scored straight-sets singles wins in dual-match competition Saturday afternoon at No. 16 Stanford.
Granic notched the biggest win of her young Longhorns career and dealt Stanford's eighth-ranked Melissa Lord a 7-5, 6-3 defeat at third singles.
Bianca Turati, who joins her twin sister Anna in the Longhorns' singles lineup, handed the Cardinal's 65th-ranked Taylor Davidson a 6-3, 6-4 defeat at first singles. Turati, who has won her last five singles decisions, scored her fourth win of the season over a ranked opponent.
Turati also defeated Stanford's sixth singles player, the 43rd-ranked Emma Higuchi, at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in January.
The Cardinal won the remaining four courts Saturday and posted a 4-2 dual-match win over the Longhorns. The two schools played singles matches first in lieu of the customary three doubles matches due to the threat of inclement weather. The teams elected against playing doubles given that Stanford clinched a dual-match win.
Texas takes on Fresno State on Sunday in Palo Alto (11 a.m. PT).

Naturally, losing the match is not the desired outcome. But, playing Stanford at home is definitely a good barometer for where the program is currently. Through these lenses, today's match was pretty encouraging. Our freshman Bianca Turati defeated Stanford at No. 1 singles and our freshman Petra Granic beat a top-10 player in the country. Regardless, we need to continue to improve and stay focused. In that event, I foresee great success for this year's edition of the Longhorns.
