Longhorns win varsity eight grand final for the first time, claim 2V8+ final for second time in three seasons at the Crew Classic.
SAN DIEGO – No. 6 Texas won two of the three NCAA Championship-level races and added a win in the novice eight race Sunday to cap an outstanding weekend of racing at the 44th annual San Diego Crew Classic on Mission Bay.
Texas won its first Jessop-Whittier Cup grand final at the Crew Classic after taking a close second a year ago to California. UT's varsity eight boat took the lead 500 meters into the race and navigated the 2,000-meter course in 6 minutes, 16.729 seconds. USC followed in second at 6:20.545 while Wisconsin placed third at 6:27.029.
Texas withstood a strong challenge from Wisconsin and was victorious in the 2V8+ Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness grand final for a second time in the last three years. The Longhorns took the lead from the Badgers 1500m into the race and claimed the win at 6:35.151. Wisconsin placed second at 6:38.195 while Washington State rounded out the top-three in 6:43.491.
Texas won Saturday's prelim heat of the Collegiate Novice 8+ Laurel Korholz Trophy, and the Longhorns followed suit with a commanding victory in the event's grand final on Sunday. Texas took top honors in 6:50.805 while British Columbia finished a distant second in the seven-boat race at 7:10.889.
Texas made a strong late push for the win in the varsity four Karen Plumleigh Cortney grand final, and though the Longhorns passed Wisconsin for second, it was USC who took the win in 7:15.025. UT took a close second at 7:16.913 while Wisconsin rounded out the top-three in 7:18.497.
Texas continues spring competition next Saturday (April 8) at the Big 12 Double Dual in Oklahoma City.
POST-REGATTA COMMENTS
Texas head coach Dave O'Neill
Today was definitely a good step for the team and our program as a whole. Winning three events here at the Crew Classic is a lot of fun, and I'm fairly pleased for where we are at this point in the season. Of course, it's all about getting faster from this point forward, and that's exactly what we'll do. We knew all boats would have to race hard, and I'm fairly happy with how things went. There are definitely things that we need to do better, and we'll be back to work Tuesday morning.
