05.12.2017 | Men's Tennis
Longhorns await No. 29 Tulane in the second round Saturday at 1 p.m. CT.
AUSTIN, Texas – No. 10 Texas (20-8) claimed the doubles point and added three singles wins in an authoritative 4-0 win over Presbyterian (18-11) in the first round of the NCAA Championships. The Longhorns will take on No. 29 Tulane in the tournament's second round (round of 32) Saturday. First serve is set for 1 p.m. CT at Caswell Tennis Center.
Texas won doubles matches at the third and first positions to lock up the doubles point. Sophomores Colin Markes and Harrison Scott led off with a 6-0 win over Diego Manzanas and Jaime Lopez at third doubles. Presbyterian won at second doubles, but Texas' George Goldhoff and Leonardo Telles produced a late service break to fend off Presbyterian's Ben Kelley and Joel Roberts, 7-5 at first doubles.
Scott staked Texas to a 2-0 lead with his 6-1, 6-0 win over Brandon Mills at second singles. Christian Sigsgaard, selected Thursday as the Big 12 Conference Freshman of the Year, put away Alexander Lykou 6-0, 6-1 at first singles to give Texas a 3-0 lead.
Sophomore Rodrigo Banzer finished off the Longhorns' victory with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Lopez at sixth singles. The remaining courts were suspended.
POST-MATCH COMMENTS
Texas head coach Michael Center
On the first-round win over Presbyterian
Presbyterian did some good things in doubles. They were pretty aggressive, and I thought we were a little flat at No. 2 doubles. We gave up our serve a couple times early where I thought we could have been a little more aggressive. In singles, we were pretty sharp. We got three pretty quickly. The first one is down, so now we have to get ready for a very good Tulane team.
On the last home match at Caswell on Saturday: Great weather and a big match tomorrow to move on to the round of 16. We hope to see a great crowd out here tomorrow. It will be George Goldhoff's last match out here, so please come and support the Horns tomorrow.
