Texas coach to serve as USA men's head coach at IAAF World Championships this summer
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field Head Coach Mario Sategna will wear the red, white and blue this summer as he will serve Team USA as its men's head coach at the IAAF World Championships in London. Sategna joins an elite list of former Texas coaches to serve Team USA as a head coach at a major championship event.
USATF announced Sategna and the other members of the Team USA coaching staff on Thursday. The IAAF World Championships are slated for August 4-13 from London Stadium, site of the 2012 Olympic Games.
This is the first time for Sategna to serve as a head coach for Team USA at a major championship event. He did assist Team USA last summer at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio as a men's assistant coach for throws. He also has been an assistant coach for Team USA at the IAAF World Championships, serving as the jumps and multi-events coach in 2011.
"This is a tremendous honor to represent our nation on the global stage at the World Championships this summer," Sategna said. "I am so thankful to USATF for this opportunity to lead Team USA at such a prestigious event. I look forward to helping the United States of America compete against the best athletes from around the world in London.
"I'm also thankful to the University of Texas for their continued support of track and field and will represent the University with pride this summer. It speaks volumes that USATF thinks highly enough of our program to give me the privilege to coach our national team."
Another Longhorn will be on a Team USA coaching staff this summer. Lifetime Longhorn and former two-sport star Eric Metcalf will be an assistant coach on the men's team at this summer's Pan American Junior Championships. Metcalf currently is an assistant coach for the Washington Huskies.
