Track & Field earns 32 Academic All-Big 12 selections

Track & Field teams show strength in classroom
AUSTIN, Texas – The Big 12 Conference announced its 2017 Academic All-Big 12 Track & Field Teams on Tuesday and the Texas Longhorns came away with 32 honorees. A total of 27 of those were named to the first team for Texas as the league recognized 245 student-athletes overall. Kansas led the league with 44 selections, and Oklahoma State edged Texas with 36.
Texas landed 14 men on the first team and two on the second team. The women's team had 13 make the first team and three named to the second team.
The 14 Longhorns on the first team for the men, was tops in the conference for a third straight year while Kansas led overall with 18 combined men's first and second teamers.
It also marks the third straight year the Texas men have set a program record for first-team honorees. The total of 16 on the men's side also is the best in program history, defeating last year's total of 14.
With 16 total honorees for the second straight year the Texas women posted the second-best in school history behind 19 from 2010 and 2012. The 13 first-teamers also is second in the women's program trailing 16 from 2010 and 2012.
Eight men repeated as first team members as the Big 12 honored Carlton Anumnu, Charles Anumnu and Parks McNeil for the third time in their careers. Logan Emery, Senoj-Jay Givans, Jake McConnell, Brian Peterson and Barrett Poth earned their second first-team honors. Chris Irvin was named to the first team after earning second team honors last year.
The women's team saw Hannah Grubb and Mary Beth Hamilton receive first-team status for the third time while Shay Petty, Sandie Raines and Ali Uhle all received first-team honors back-to-back years. Ariel Jones marked her second year on the team, this year as a second-team member.
Hamilton was recognized for having a perfect 4.0 GPA over the last two semesters.
Longhorns receiving Academic All-Big 12 honors for the first time in their careers are: Kirema Macharia, Ika Morton, Chris Ntreh, Nick Phynn, Jacob Pickle, Alex Rogers, David Rueff, Mariam Abdul-Rashid, Gabby Crank, Haley Crouser, Chrisann Gordon, Meghan Lloyd, Ashley Miller, Raquel Tjernagel, Pamela Uchebo, Georgia Wahl and Jordan Welborn.
The Big 12 recognized a total of 245 track and field student-athletes this year on the all-academic teams with 93 members on the men's team and 152 on the women's. A total of 192 of those student-athletes earned first team honors and 21 were recognized with perfect 4.0 GPA's.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or high either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except the percentage of participation are also eligible.
