Former Longhorn All-American Madisyn Cox takes advantage of her final qualifying opportunity and earns a spot on Team USA for this month’s World Championships.
INDIANAPOLIS – Texas-Ex Madisyn Cox cashed in on her final qualifying opportunity and earned a spot on the U.S. roster for the World Championships Saturday on the final night of the USA Swimming National Championships.
The 17-time All-American needed a top-two finish in the 200-meter individual medley championship final to send herself to the World Championships, and she delivered. Cox became the sixth-fastest American of all time and took second in the final at 2 minutes, 9.69 seconds.
Cox dropped to third place through the 100-meter mark but moved back into second after splitting 36.90 on the event's third leg, breaststroke. The two-time Big 12 Swimmer of the Year wouldn't be denied in the final 50 meters, as she came home in a race-leading 30.52 seconds to finish just .12 of a second behind the winner, Melanie Margalis.
Cox qualifies for her first long course, senior-level international meet after previously competing at a pair of short course World Championship meets for the United States. The Lubbock native will join Team USA for the World Championships set for July 23-30 in Budapest, Hungary.
