LONDON – Texas rising sophomore Rushelle Burton showed she can compete on the biggest stage Friday at the IAAF World Championships. The 2017 Big 12 champion in the 100 meter hurdles advanced to the semifinals for Jamaica and would go on to finish in 12th place overall.
The fastest freshman in NCAA history, Burton clocked 12.94 seconds in both the preliminaries and semifinals on Friday from London Stadium.
Burton finished third in her preliminary heat to automatically advance to the semifinals. Her time 12.94 ranked 12th in the prelims. She would then run 12.94 again just a few hours later in the semifinals to finish fifth in her heat and 12th overall.
Only one runner in the field of 40 athletes was younger than Burton as she made her major championship debut at the senior level.
There is more action to come for Longhorns from the world championships in London. Lifetime Longhorn Trey Hardee completes the decathlon on Saturday. Three more Longhorns have a shot to run in relays on Saturday. Morolake Akinosun and Senoj-Jay Givans are listed in the relay pool for their respective nations in the 4x100 meter relay. Chrisann Gordon is listed in the pool for Jamaica's 4x400 relay as well. Prelims for the relays are slated for Saturday morning.
Live action on Saturday morning will air on NBC Sports Network at 4 a.m. NBC Sports Gold will have exclusive feeds of the decathlon competition online for subscribers to the service.
