Hoffman, USA lead World University Games after opening 18 holes

Texas sophomore Emilee Hoffman fired a three-over-par 75 in the opening round.
TAIPEI, Taiwan – The United States team, featuring Texas sophomore Emilee Hoffman, leads the women's golf event at the 29th World University Games following the opening 18 holes on Thursday at the Sunrise Golf & Country Club in Taipei, Taiwan.
Hoffman, a native of Folsom, Calif., recorded a three-over-par 75 for the opening round, which placed her 16th among 58 individuals on Thursday. As a team, the United States charted a total of 137. The team total is comprised of the two best individual results from each team daily.
UCLA's Mariel Galdiano led the individual field with a five-under-par 67 to pace the United States team, while Stanford's Andrea Lee totaled a two-under-par 70.
The winner of the individual event is the golfer with the lowest aggregate scores for the four rounds. The total team scores will be determined by adding the two best individual scores from each day for the four rounds. The gold medal will be awarded to the team with the lowest aggregate score for 72 holes.
Competition will begin at 6:30 a.m. each day in Taipei, which will be 5:30 p.m. CT the previous day in Austin. Taipei is 13 hours ahead of Central time.
Hoffman was a member of the Big 12 All-Tournament Team as a freshman, also garnering Academic All-Big 12 First Team honors. She posted eight top-25 finishes in her rookie campaign, including a runner-up showing at the Big 12 Championship. Hoffman was the individual champion at the 2017 Lady Paladin Invitational in Greensville, S.C., where she tied a Texas record with a seven-under-par 65 during the first round. Her final score of 210 at that event marked the fourth-lowest total in Texas history.
Hoffman finished her prep career ranked No. 23 in the American Junior Golf Association Polo Golf Rankings, was rated No. 20 by Golfweek and No. 3 in her 2016 class. She won four national tournaments in 20 events during her junior career. She completed her junior golf career with a victory at the 48th-annual Big I National Tournament, including a second-round 64, which set a new women's course record. Hoffman played in the 2016 AJGA Wyndham Cup, helping the West Team to a 26-24 win over the East Team. She was a ROLEX All-American in 2015 and 2016.
