Longhorns complete annual intrasquad meet in advance of their season opener next month at Florida.
AUSTIN, Texas – Team White knocked off Team Orange by a 175-104 count as three-time defending NCAA champion Texas opened the fall with its annual intra-squad meet at UT's Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center.
All-America senior Joseph Schooling kicked off the meet with a win for Team White in the 100-yard backstroke at 46.29 seconds. Freshman and U.S. national teamer Austin Katz took second at 46.81 while redshirt sophomore Ryan Harty took third at 47.07.
Junior Casey Melzer gave the Team White its second win in the 100 breaststroke at 54.78. All-America junior Tate Jackson made it three-for-three for Team White with his 47.11 in the 100 butterfly.
Freshman diver Jordan Windle, who already has represented Team USA at the FINA World Championships, claimed the one-meter event for Team White with 332.85 points. His sophomore counterpart Grayson Campbell won the three-meter board for Team Orange with 351.97 points.
Freshman J.T. Larson led a contingent of newcomers atop the final standings in the 1,000 freestyle. Larson took the win at 9:06.10 while Chris Yeager took second at 9:24.04.
Junior Townley Haas, the two-time defending NCAA champion and American record holder in the 200-yard freestyle, won the same event Friday for Team Orange in 1:35.95. Schooling posted his second win of the day for Team White, as he claimed the 50 freestyle in 19.32.
All-America senior Jonathan Roberts claimed a competitive 200 IM with his top mark of 1:47.20. Harty posted a second-place mark of 1:47.54 for Team Orange.
Schooling returned to put up a particularly impressive showing in the 200 butterfly. The former two-time NCAA champion in the event was victorious in 1:41.77. Freshman Sam Pomajevich added a second-place time of 1:46.98. Senior Brett Ringgold added a winning mark of 43.36 in the 100 freestyle.
Freshman Austin Katz was victorious in the 200 backstroke at 1:42.71. A pair of freshmen finished atop the final standings in the 500 freestyle, as Larson was victorious in 4:27.01. His classmate Parker Neri took second in 4:30.31.
Melzer finished off a sweep of the breaststroke events with his win at 200 yards in 2:00.35. The Team White quartet of Schooling, Neri, sophomore Jacob Huerta and Jackson finished off the win with its victory in the 400 freestyle relay at 2:54.87.
Texas opens its 2017-18 season next month (Oct. 20-21) with a double-dual against Florida and Indiana in Gainesville, Florida.
