Trio guided top-ranked Longhorns to 14 wins in 16 events at No. 16 Alabama
AUSTIN, Texas — Texas Longhorns standouts David Johnston, Nick Harris and Rafael Fente-Damers garnered Southeastern Conference weekly honors, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Johnston earned SEC Swimmer of the Week plaudits, with Harris collecting SEC Diver of the Week distinction. Meanwhile, Fente-Damers was named SEC Freshman of the Week.
A graduate student from Dallas, Johnston won two individual events in the season opener at No. 16 Alabama. He placed first in the 1000 free with a time of 8:43.95, the fastest time nationally, while also finishing first in the 500 free at 4:1408, the second-fastest time in the country. Johnston was a part of Texas' 400 free relay, splitting 43.89 on the second leg.
Harris — a native of Chester Springs, Pa. — swept the springboard events in the season-opening victory. Harris scored 18 points after recording the top score in the 1-meter at 372.13 and in the 3-meter at 399.53.
A native of Madrid, Spain, Fente-Damers claimed two individual victories and contributed to multiple winning relays in his career debut. The freshman registered a pair of top-10 nationally ranked times, as he finished with a time of 19.37 in the 50 free and 42.40 in the 100 free. Fente-Damers also swam the leadoff leg of the 400 free relay (2:50.92/42.64) and the anchor of the 200 medley relay (1:23.57/18.90).
Up next, the Longhorns return to action on Oct. 24, when Texas hosts Tennessee at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center. Prelims are set for 10 a.m., with finals to follow at 5:30 p.m.
