Sategna announces promotion for field events coach
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Track & Field Head Coach Mario Sategna announced the promotion of Ty Sevin to Associate Head Coach on Tuesday.
"I'm very excited to announce the promotion of Ty Sevin to associate head coach. He brings a phenomenal skill set to his position, not just as one of the best field event coaches in the country, but he also has head coaching experience," Sategna said. "I think the biggest thing for us as a program is best utilizing all of our resources, whether it's out on the track or even in the office. I'm excited about the promotion for Ty and I'm looking forward to a great 2017 fall in cross country and then getting the indoor and outdoor track season started in the spring semester."
Sevin originally joined Sategna's coaching staff when Sategna was named head coach in the summer of 2013. He joins sprints and hurdles coach Tonja Buford-Bailey as the second associate head coach on staff and he will continue to work with UT's throwers and pole vaulters.
Sevin's group played a significant role in the success the Longhorns had in 2017.
He coached Haley Crouser to the first Big 12 title in program history in the women's javelin. Her throw of 52.45 meters (171-0) bested the field by nearly 10 feet. Crouser would go on to finish eighth in the javelin at the NCAA Championships to become the first All-American in the event for the women since 1988. Her throw of 53.09 meters (174-2) ranks her second in school history.
Sevin's pole vaulters were again among the best in the nation last season where he coached Kally Long and Barrett Poth to appearances in the NCAA Championships both indoors and out with each earning one second-team All-America honor. Shay Petty joined Long at the championship meet indoors to make her first NCAA Championship appearance and give Sevin a pair of female pole vaulters at the meet. Texas was one of just two schools to have multiple women compete in the pole vault at NCAA Indoors.
Outdoors, Sevin's throwers broke a pair of school records in 2017.
Junior Lauryn Caldwell improved on her own school record in the hammer throw to open the outdoor season with a toss of 55.42 meters (181-10). Freshman Elena Bruckner claimed victory in the discus at the Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays presented by Spectrum with her measurement of 54.65 meters (179-3) to become the new standard bearer in that event for the Longhorns.
In total, Sevin's men scored 23 points at the Big 12 Championship outdoors to help the team secure the title and his vaulters and throwers combined for 9.5 points at the indoor conference meet. His women's group scored 25 points at the outdoor conference championship and 18 indoors.
In addition to his four years on staff at Texas, Sevin has 10 years of coaching experience at other universities and has spent time as a resident coach at the United States Olympic Trainer Center as well. He served as co-interim head coach during the fall semester last year along with Buford-Bailey.
